Jack Black sucks period. He literally plays the same character in every movie. Regardless if he picks bad roles, that no excuse for protraying the same character over and over. Its like he's playing a parody of himself.

I can admit it was different but I don't want you to think I hate it I just never cared for it and have never even brought it up in conversation. All comedies though if seen at that perfect moment will make people happy and I would never tell someone a comedy they liked should never have been made because it is the most subjective of genres.

THAT I can agree on: that Black might be preferred in a supporting role, especially at this point in his career. Although, I didn't really care for him in Tropic Thunder; he wasn't bad, but didn't really add anything to the movie. For a glimpse of the 'cult' following for Nacho Libre, perhaps check out the positive reviews of it on Amazon. There are also plenty of negative reviews as well, to be fair; I have notice a big love-hate attitude towards that movie. In my opinion, one of his best performances; you gotta admit that he finally played a character that was a little bit different than his usual gig.

Right I can't quote Nacho Libre at all and I haven't really come across the cult following you talk of but I can understand that comedies attract that, I personally love Anchorman and can quote that film beat for beat and I understand that some don't like it. I don't generalize anything I dislike everything he's done, the majority love Shaun and Fuzz (although it's mostly cult) and those I mentioned are believed to be bad films by the majority.

You cannot even a small bit try to claim that elements are directly attributable to Apatow as they are more than likely due to the director (who I also enjoy). Yes I enjoy Michael Cera and even though he is mostly the same I still enjoy it (I mean Woody Allen, Charlie Chaplin etc were all one note aswell but there great).

BUT I never said I hated Jack Black, I like him! I just don't like a lot of his films and prefer him in a supporting role.

Kind of nitpicky. Libre wasn't supposed to be fraught with comedy; it was supposed to have a loveable hero mixed with that subtle, quirky humor that Jared Hess brought out in Napoleon Dynamite. I know Libre has its cult following, but I don't think you should write it off so easily and think everybody hates it. I know adults to teenagers that love the movie. Even people that claim they hate it can still spit out 4-5 quotes from the movie. Don't be quick to generalize your disslike for Simon Pegg to everyone's either. (I ended up liking Run Fatboy.)

One of the the main problems with Year One was its gross-out, needless humor, presumably from the hands of Apatow. Eating shit, vomit, tongue-fondling a banana, circumcision, etc. Seriously? I know it didn't help that Jack Black didn't bring anything new to the table. They need a better co-star than Michael “one-note” Cera, but you probably like HIM, right?

Nacho Libre WAS a paper thin comedic vehicle though! I expected a movie on the lighter side and it was embarrassing. The only stuff I can think of that he done with Apatow is the previously mentioned Anchorman, Year One…and…The Cable Guy If memory serves but he would be lucky to work with Apatow more ,regardless of Year One, considering his pedigree.

Simon Pegg though has made more bad films than good (this considering I dislike all his work) I’m talking about The Big Nothing? Run Fatboy Run? The Good Night? and yes How To Lose Friends was far from good. I have long ago accepted that people enjoy the interminable Shaun, Fuzz and Spaced but he will never become mainstream. Oh and his Scottish accent was terrible.

Jack Black was surrounded by children in Nacho Libre. I guess I’m not surprised at the hate for this movie, on here at least, but I think you need to go back and watch it again; expect a movie aimed for kids; it’s PG for Chrissakes. Adam Sandler surprised me in Bedtime Stories. I’m surprised no one’s mentioning Sandler’s dramatic chops in Reign Over Me, which = good movie.

Back to Black, yes, I think his gig is wearing thin, and he is one of my favorite comedic actors. I think he should go back to doing a School of Rock or Nacho Libre sequel before another paper-thin comedic vehicle. Black should stay away from Judd Apatow too–Apatow who’s low-brow sense of humor rears its ugly head in any movie PG-13 or R, and is the true gig that is wearing thin. Jack Black is tentatively signed on to do a movie with Dave Chappelle that might come out in 2011; now, if that doesn’t draw interest, I don’t know what will. If Jack Black’s career does keep going down the toilet, however, I think the comedic actor to follow (who’s not too mainstream) will be Simon Pegg, who hasn’t made a poor movie yet, to my recollection; even How to Lose Friends and Alienate People was good.

As someone who walked out of Year One wondering why a caveman would need to scat, I was thinking I'd be really tired of Jack Black. And I am – but I think for the most part he already is relegated to side roles. Sure he takes on a leading role from time to time, but in a strange way, those movies are usually the most obviously catered to those that find his humor funny – so they tend to work.

There's also something to be said about School of Rock considering it seems to be the one movie people can agree on that was 1) good and 2) he was the focus. I think it's because he was surrounded by children. His normal persona wasn't necessarily toned down, but it becoming sweet and endearing instead of slightly pervy and greasy.

There may be other major reasons why it worked, but I think that's the most pressing.

I like Jack Black. Every movie I've seen with him starring, I like, including the underrated Orange County, a film where he steals every scene he's in. I also think he does fairly well in Jackson's stupendous - screw you Josh :) - King Kong. He's excellent in The Holiday, High Fidelity, School of Rock, and Tropic Thunder. I'd also put Nacho Libre out there as one of his better performances, but that's just me.
