I've got to say that I think most of the films mentioned in the comment field deserve consideration as well. Except Amityville Horror. Terrible.

My vote would've gone to The Descent with Hostel a close second.

Although it may not be considered a horror film, I think Funny Games (U.S. version) was absolutely terrifying, because it is so real. A close second would definitely be 28 Days Later....

I think horror movies have been generally strong lately, apart from the expected run-of-the-mill type featured this weekend. So far this year we've had My Bloody Valentine 3d which was fun and was the first horror film to use 3d effectively, forget that retarded jason 3d shit that didn't even work. Then we had Drag Me to Hell, another unique and highly entertaining spin on the horror genre. Then there was Orphan which has one of the most unexpected twists and is genuinely creepy all throughout.

The decade's not even over yet; Whiteout looks like it could be interesting, and Shutter Island is sure to be a success.. both of these films seem to be fresh concepts, and did you happen to hear about a little movie called The Wolfman?

You're both wrong. Gore Verbinski's "The Ring" is the greatest horror film of the decade. It was the ONLY good remake of a Japanese horror film. The fact that it started the whole trend of remaking Japanese horror films speaks loudly of its popularity and influence in Hollywood. In a decade which relied mostly on torture porn, it dared to be bloodless. It created its own horror icons (who could've thought an oval shaped mirror or an old well could be scary?). It was heavily atmospheric, having Samara's presence throughout the film, even though she wasn't reveled until the final 45 minutes. Plus it was an awesome mystery plot.

Great movie.

I totally agree that there's an over saturation of zombie films, but that didn't stop [REC] from making me shit my pants so hard that my colon was void of even the idea of shit for weeks after first viewing. It takes a lot to scare me, but [REC] literally had me curled up in a ball and screaming. The final 10 minutes are more intense than any bit of film I can recollect and will have you bolting your attic door closed the second the credits roll.

The Orphange is also a favorite, as well as Let The Right One In, but I don't know if I would call that one horror. I'm not really sure how the Strangers wound up in this convo. As much as I loved the scene where they finally succeed (sorry, spoilers), getting to that point is trecherous.

28 Days Later is solid. Only problem is it completely falls apart in the last 45 minutes when it tries to be Die Hard. But the first hour or so is amazing.

The Orphanage is one that I've never seen. Everytime I've had a chance to see it, some divine interference always kept me from seeing it. I've heard great things, though.

The Devil's Backbone > The Orphanage me thinks, though i do really like The Orphanage. And I agree that there's not a single domestic film worthy to be considered amongst the best of the decade. Both of our best films are remakes (Dawn of the Dead and The Ring).

However, I think 28 Days Later is going to be the film that's remembered most from this decade.

While I do agree that both are good movies, I don't think that they are the best horror films of this decade. The Descent started off good, but quickly went into a hack and slash monster movie, much like any zombie film. And while I thoroughly enjoyed Let the Right One In, I didn't really consider it as a horror movie, more like a dramatic piece with vampires thrown in. While I think that Hollywood went overboard with the torture-porn genre, The first Saw was amazing, original characters, a tension building mystery, and one of the best twist endings in years. Also 28 Days Later, and the Ring were well-made horror movies. (sequels....maybe not :s)

Why Sarah would go back into that cave after the first Descent is probably even more unexplainable than you think, as she never was supposed to leave it.

The film had a pseudo-happy ending recut exclusively for the enjoyment of the NA audience.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Descent#Altern...
Which in my opinion is an absolute mood killer.

And producing this sequel is likely to be an idea as bad as recutting the original's ending for the sake of having a Spielberg-like ending. I mean, why didn't they go fully ahead with it? threw some aliens coming down from a mothership and had them explain that it was all well and dandy and that the bad experience in the caves had only been in her head. *sighs*
