Very thought-provoking article. I disagree in a few things. First, I don’t find her “just” a young woman who has sex on camera for money – i actually find her pretty unique in that she is the only person I know who openly says porn is a good thing – everyone else seems to either condemn it, tolerate it, or (the boldest) confess they personally enjoy it. She comes out and says: it’s good for me who’s doing it, it’s good for the people who watch it, it’s good for people who make it: it’s just plain good. Also, I like the fact that she has the guts to come out of that “anonymous superstar” role of porn performers and say to the mainstream world: here I am, you will have to know who I am even if you’re supposed to act like you don’t. Pornstars who go mainstream usually want to “hide” their past. Second, I agree with jefley that if you are constantly interviewed you just can’t invent something new for each interviewer – you wouldn’t have the time or the intellectual energy to do anything else, and she definitely seems to want to do many (other) different things. So, “cultural icon”? No clue. A special person? I definitely think so.

What kind of truth or depth would you expect to grasp in any 15 minute interview? No one's soul, personality, or mentality is ever up for easy grabs. I think what is actually being revealed here is the desire to grasp a healthy understanding of young female pornstars. The possibility of that grasp is really what Sasha Grey has started to embody because she claims, and appears to be, a fullfledged respectable human being who likes working in porn. This is extremely difficult for our culture because it strikes at the real heart of the pornography taboo: sex is ok for men, not for women. Same as always. That's why a review can be published by a man admitting “I’m a red-blooded American male with the ability to type the phrase “ball gag” into a search engine” and he is both accepted and guarded with that sentence– we'll ask no more of him because it is his own business and he maintains full respect (in fact let's give him extra points for a tongue in cheek rogueishness). Whereas if a female pornstar (exact girl with the ball gag no less..) wants to have a fuller life outside pornography– the response is quite different. We won't let her guard her sentences for own privacy. We won't allow her respect. Our desire to push her back into the mental void we normally keep female pornstars in makes us abnormally critical (and for others, hopeful..) of her every move. To say this more plainly: for the media to desire full depth, truth, or realness from anyone every interview is plain stupid. It's not really about her as an individual, reading whatever books she reads, its about a straightforward hypocrasy that exists in this world– it's about her expecting the world to give her the same respect we give to the men who jerk off to her. And if you wouldn't give her that, then you are a sexist asshole.

I don't know if it's so much of a gimmick than a PR move. Having her in the film will draw an audience who wouldn't bother to see the film. And the bottom line is they are trying to make money, even it they call it art.

Dude, claiming that in some way its disingenuos for her to give you the same answers is ridiculous. If she claims to be presenting the real her, then why would she answer differently or seem different in various interviews. Surely the real her would give the same answers.

Finally, someone who is able to write an article on her and realizing that there is more underneath the surface. And what lies beneath is nowhere near is amazing as what has been reported.

Most people will read one article and be stunned. Read a few more and you’ll notice that not only are all the answers very well rehearsed, she will avoid the question when too difficult for her. Or even get cranky at the interviewer.

That's a whole different discussion – how her personality lends itself clearly to playing a roll like that while taking a look at how Sasha Grey and her character are very, very different people. If anything, that's partially why I felt the movie worked (on a slightly better than average but way better than Bubble level). There are a few scenes that look like regional theater, but there are one or two moments where she shines through like a real person and you realize that her character is playing a role in life, keeping the armor on – it's not just that Sasha Grey is flat as an actress.

I've seen some of her work (porn), and I've seen her interviewed and have been reading much about TGE. I get the feeling she's the girl/boy in high school who says they're into poetry or philosophy and expects you to be awed, but in reality it's just a front. They're really not that deep at all. Just pay attention to the answers she gives to deep or contemplative questions, she doesn't really SAY anything.
