I was sort of curious, after the ref in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, so I found a copy and started watching.

I didn't mind the operatic theme; a man needs inspiration. I love the opening scene, with the muses coming alive and dancing.

Where it lost me was in the first ensemble acting work, where the hero returns to the studio to rejoin his buddies; man, that acting stunk to high heaven! I'm surprised that isn't citation number one in relegating Xanadu to trash status, in most folks' books.

It was just a case of sloppy casting, from the standpoint of ensuring the selection of unmitigated acting talent.

About one minute into that scene; after I'd ensured myself that I wasn't hallucinating; I turned the movie off and did something else with my life.

To be honest, I don't know if I would love Xanadu as much as I do if it weren't for the nostalgia factor. It feels ridiculous and cheap, but there's a kernel of magic somewhere in there that makes it work for me.

I listened to ELO for years before realizing there was a movie. Then I watched the movie, and...sad to say...I'm one of those detractors. It probably stems from my bias against 80s movies - it's such cheap decadence. The look and feel is awful to me. I'm cool with the absurdity (although it bugs me in some 80s movies), but I think since I didn't grow up loving this one, it's just another sort of ridiculous experience. Sort of forgettable.

Hey, don't feel bad. I had the same reaction as a completely hetero boy. I just liked it.

I just hope my parents didn't know how much I liked this movie as a kid. I'm sure it would have made them worry about the prospect of grandkids one day.

It's pure cheese...but tasty cheese.
