Wow, I had no Idea about the cutting. I'll definitely have to watch the director's cut. This reminds me a lot of Antoine Fuqua's King Arthur. Others may not agree, but the director's cut of that film is way better then the crap they released in theaters. Though that was due to a late decision to go from a hard R to pg-13...ohh the crap we endure for the sake of the teenager demographic...

I'm only 21 myself, so I think I can let you off for missing it first time around. :) Great article, btw. I only sat through this a few months back and I already feel like seeing it again. Good sign.

it was painful to watch the theatrical cut...but I warmed up to the director's cut which is a much better film...I'm shocked that Ridley still isn't able to release his films the way he wants...I'm wishful that Robin Hood isn't cut down this much...

I've still never seen the directors cut of this film. It's always been "next" on my DVD purchase list. I really enjoyed the thearical cut. No, it wasn't perfect, but the story carried me along and it certainly looks grandious.

Thanks for the write up, I think this just got bumped up on my proverbial "purchase" list.

Uhhh, I would hope someone is paying him or else he shouldn't be writing these great articles for free, ass! The theatrical version sucked and I have a feeling that's the only version you saw. The director's cut is hands down my favorite film of all-time. Who knew that cutting an hours worth of plot and character development would ruin a film? Well, I'm sure we all did except for Fox. Seriously, did they even watch the director's cut or did they just look at the running time and balk. People talk about how bad X3, AVP 1&2 and Die Hard 4 were but the biggest travesty Fox ever committed was butchering this modern epic.

I bet my life that the D.C of the film would've cleaned up during awards season in 2005 and made some serious bank. This is Ridley Scott's best film and Fox fucked it over, it's unforgivable! I own both the 4-disc dvd with the awesome intermission and the beautiful looking blu-ray version. It's the only film I have twice in my collection, it's that good. It also has one of the best and most haunting scores from Harry Gregson-Williams that I've ever heard.

You are absolutely right, I had forgotten about Once Upon A Time in America mainly because I was only a few years old when the film was released theatrically and I never had the opportunity to see that cut, but heard it was roughly around an hour and half shorter - which is unbelievable considering the scope and density of the cut that played at Cannes.

Very good call on that, and now that I think about it I believe Brazil received the same treatment, but again I've only seen Gilliam's Director's Cut.

have to agree wholeheartedly with this article - when i saw it in the cinema it was plain average yet i heard good things about the director's cut. I picked up the 4 disc dvd set for about 10 quid and was astounded at the difference that it made - i now love this movie

I own the Director's Cut and it's the only version I've ever seen. It really is a fantastic film.

But near the start of the review you said you weren't sure dramatic studio re-cutting like this had ever been done before, and I just had to chip in and say: Once Upon a Time in America. That amazing film was completely gutted before the restored director's cut emerged.
