How can you degrade Jon Voight's role as "some crusty old guy"? Jon served as McCauley’s (De Niro's) fence. Without him, they would've never been able to sell the bonds they stole from the armored car and they would've never received word of the bank job. If you need further clarification as to what a "fence" is, I've included a link from Wikipedia here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fence_%28criminal%29

As to Tone Loc's performance I feel that his was underrated and as an actor, with that great gravelly voice, he's under-utilized.

You nailed the essence of De Niro, Pacino and method acting in your writing. I, as an aging baby-boomer, lament that De Niro has aged. If only we could all stay as sleek, polished and fit as De Niro's Neil McCauley in this great film.

That's not a bad idea at all. Never saw Quick Change myself so I can't comment on that one, but I am a fan of all things The Dark Knight.

It was refreshing that you focused on the the character study as this film excelled in that as well. No harm done. I think it's safe to say we ALL love this film. Keep up the good work!

BY the way, rounding out my top 3 Bank heists would have to be The Dark Knight and Quick Change (to obscure?), with an honorable mention going to Raising Arizona and Point Break. I'm sure I've forgotten a gem in there somewhere, and I'm not counting Dog Day Afternoon since it was the entire movie. Maybe you could put up an article on this topic...

Ahh my tragic flaw. You're absolutely right sir (or madam). I would actually rank the heist as the #1 bank heist ever filmed, but due to my verbose writing style (as filmfreek mentions below), something had to go. While there are many awesome bank heists captured on celluloid, I wanted to focus more on Heat's ability to paint such an even picture of both sides of the law. That, in my opinion, is a rarity in cop dramas these days.

Damn! Another one to get on BluRay. I try to be selective when it comes to purchasing movies on that format - it has to b e something visually and aurally worth the purchase, and this one falls into that category. Thanks for the news!

Absolutely right about this one - this is one of my favorite crime movies and is a great, great film. The scene in the diner is a classic and the shoot-out at the bank is awesome, particularly if you listen to it in 5.1.

I don't have anything else to say - you've already covered it. Good job!

This column is called "why We love it" and yet this has got to be the first review of Heat that I've ever read that did not even mention the Bank heist and shootout. Definitely in the top 3 bank jobs ever filmed if not the best ever! WTF!
