If you are impressed by Audie Murphy's movie try reading the book. The movie used much license in recreating much of the real action. It was deemed too real and unbelievable to put on the screen. God Bless Audie he died 29 yrs ago the 28th of May his body found on Memorial Day.

Fantastic movie. My dad showed this to me a long time ago. This and The Longest Day are two of my favorite war movies

I have almost all of his movies, read several books about him including his “To Hell and Back”. He was my hero as a youngster and in later years realized that all the men & women in WWII were heroes. I like many of the comments below, have watched the movie many times over & am amazed at what he was able to do; during the war. Somewhere I read that he was trying to let the other characters be more out for the public to see than himself. Great actor when the director let him.

I was a young recruit in August 1955 when Audie Murphy came to San Antonio to promote the movie To Hell and Back. I, among other recruits joining the Army that month, were very fortunate to have had Audie Murphy participate in our swearing-in ceremony at the Majestic Theater and tagged as “the Audie Murphy platoon”. I have never been able to find a photo of that occasion and would appreciate any leads I could pursue.

I remember this film from years ago. Didn't know much about the pre-wars years of Murphy. Sounds like he would have been a hero even if he had never put on a uniform. An amazing person if there ever was.

Thank you for this. My dad made me watch this film years ago because he told me it could show me what bravery and heroism were really about. He wasn't wrong. It remains one of my absolute favorites and I recommend it to anyone that I can.
