DVDs I Bought This Week!

A wise man once said “It’s not just about seeing Star Wars two weeks before everyone else. You’ve gotta plow through crap like Marie Antoinette and Catwoman as well.” I have the fortune of being able to see all of the films that I want, and find out that they are only worth one viewing (or less) before I would willingly pay for the DVD…and subsequently end up hating myself later. But for every The Whoopee Boys there has to be an Indiana Jones, and because of the great films I am able to put myself further in debt every week.

The MistThe Mist

Director: Frank Darabont
Cast: Thomas Jane, Marcia Gay Harden, Laurie Holden, Andre Braugher, Toby Jones
Rated: Rated R for violence, terror and gore, and language.

Synopsis: Menacing precipitation causes terror for The Punisher and The Shermanator.

Special Features: Introduction by Frank Darabont, The Director’s Vision: The Complete Feature Film in Black and White, When The Darkness Came, Taming The Beast, Monsters Among Us, The Horror of It All, An Appreciation of an Artist, Deleted Scenes.

Why Buy It?: Other than the fact that I got really excited about this movie just from talking to Tom Jane and Frank Darabont, alot of people were saying that this was most shocking movie ending ever. Watching the film in black and white is actually better, its creepier. So I’d get the 2-Disc edition.

Formats: Blu-ray, Standard DVD

Wristcutters: A Love StoryWristcutters: A Love Story

Director: Goran Dukic
Cast: Patrick Fugit, Shannyn Sossamon, Will Arnett
Rated: Rated R for language and disturbing content involving suicide.

Synopsis: Suicidees find love in the afterlife.

Special Features: Audio commentary with Director Goran Dukic, Producers Tatiana Kelly and actors Mikal P. Lazarev actor Patrick Fugit, Featurette “Making the Final Cut: The Wristcutters Journey”, Deleted Scenes, Patrick’s On-Set Photo Gallery, Director’s Storyboard

Why Buy It?: This was one of my favorite obscure films of last year. I loved it. It has all the makings of what could be a cult classic. Wristcutters: A Love Story is an awesome dark comedy that is a must to check out.

Formats: Standard DVD

Jimmy Carter Man from PlainsJimmy Carter Man from Plains

Director: Jonathan Demme
Cast: Jimmy Carter
Rated: Rated PG for some thematic elements and brief disturbing images.

Synopsis: Follow Jimmy Carter around, and watch him do his thing.

Special Features: Commentary, “The Music Sessions”, Bonus Scene

Why Rent It?: I thought that this one looked interesting. It has received some positive response, and enough acclaim to make this worth a rent. I love good documentaries, and this might eventually become a purchase…but for now it is only worth a glance.

The Kite RunnerThe Kite Runner

Director: Marc Forster
Cast: Khalid Abdalla, Homayoun Ershadi, Zekiria Ebrahimi, Ahmad Khan Mahmoodzada, Shaun Toub, Nabi Tanha, Ali Danesh Bakhtyari, Said Taghmaoui
Rated: Rated PG-13 for strong thematic material including the rape of a child, violence and brief strong language.

Synopsis: A man visits his homeland to save his best friend’s son.

Special Features:

Why Rent It?: This is another one that I wasn’t particularly interested in. The Kite Runner was a good book, but as soon as I heard “based on the most beloved novel of our generation” I rolled my eyes. This has been receiving alot of good talk, but I feel alot safer just renting this one.

Formats: Blu-ray, Standard DVD
