Discuss: Are You Excited About Another Kevin Smith Movie?

There’s been news floating around about Kevin Smith bring the world A Couple of Dicks, the most recent bit involving Seann William Scott and Adam Brody joining the production that already sees Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan teaming up as buddy cops.

And, really, when you start off with the title as a penis-joke, how deep in the trenches could the rest of the flick go?

Interestingly, this is one of the rare projects that Smith will work on that he didn’t write himself, but even with that aside there’s a solid question of whether or not audiences are ready, willing or excited for another gem from Smith.

Smith has his core following (including our very own Neil Miller – where do you think the Reject vibe comes from?) but audience reactions to his films has been mixed over the past few years. But maybe the better question actually is whether or not you’re excited for a Kevin Smith movie that he didn’t write himself. Or whether you’re excited at all.

What do you think?

I think Smith is amazing and even his worst work is better then most. I never got the hate for the guy. He is one of the nicest people to his fans. Even people in his films are very nice to the fans. Jay Mewes is one of the nicest people I've ever met. Smith is funny, and amazing. I think people are jealous because he did what we all want to and became a famous movie maker. I'm a little nervous because he didn't write it, but I will be there opening day like always.
  • I'm excited. Although, something to think about, his directing skills are probably his weak spot. Its his writing we all go to see. So what happens when he doesnt write it. Is his directing good enough to carry a movie if need be?
  • I agree. Smith's work is always a joy to watch and I look forward to everyone of his films. I don't think he'll ever better Clerks 2, that film spoke to me in ways no other film ever has, but I'll be there day one for anything he's involved with.

Honestly, I couldn't care less. I was sorta excited for his horror idea Red State, but after that fell by the wayside, I can take or leave his movies. I recently watched Zack and Miri Make A Porno, and I think I've either changed my tastes, or personally outgrew his type of humor, because I didn't laugh once at that.

Sad too, because I loved Clerks (as well as the animated series. Never saw part 2), Chasing Amy, Mallrats, Dogma, and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. But he lost me at the time Jersey Girl came out. Even though I didn't see that one either, just from hearing about it my excitement level for any of his projects bit the dust.

Maybe it had to do with working at a comic shop where I couldn't go one hour without hearing somebody either quote his movies, or have to bag and board an issue he wrote. Guess I just burnt out on the guy.
  • I'm not a very big Kevin Smith fan, but Bruce Willis and Seann William Scott in the same comedy? Sign me up. But not in advanced. I won't give two shits until there is a trailer.
  • Kevin Smith is a smart, funny guy who over-writes dialogue but it stays funny, so people dig him. He is not, however, a master storyteller. He's touched on some sweet scenes (Chasing Amy) and several hilarious adolescent antics scenes (ever movie he's done) but in terms of a start to finish solid story - I think he's still looking for it. I think you'll see him loosen the reigns a bit over the next few years and start collaborating with writers more - because the guy IS funny. He just needs help with story - both in the concept and execution.

I hope it's good, but Smith should have been trying to grow since Dogma (which has not held up so well imo). Or maybe Smith is just too rooted in the 90s, times have changed and he hasn't. I don't know what the problem is, but if he gets over that hurdle then more power to him.
  • This is a tough one. I am completely positive that Kevin Smith is a nice guy, and absolutely seems like someone that would be a lot of fun to know and hang out with. BUT, we're talking about spending money and time on movies...'the work' as they say.

It's sort of like what people said about George W. Bush...I could have a beer with him. I myself did not agree with that, but I never thought that had a single thing to do with someone's ability to govern. I can say the same thing about Kevin Smith and his movies. Sure, I would love to hang out and marvel at his giant TV that Panasonic gave him and watch Blu-Rays, but I'm growing increasingly less excited about the prospect of another Kevin Smith movie.

There was a growth that seems to have stopped after 'Jersey Girl'. While a lot of people didn't care for 'Jersey Girl', I thought it showed promise as a more coherent movie that flowed nicely and had a bigger point than referencing Star Wars and other geek culture touchstones. Which, as this site recently pointed out...are getting really old. We get it, 'Star Wars' was a big deal to a generation of kids.

So, in the end, I guess there's a certain amount of cheerleading to be done, because 'geeks'...whatever that means nowadays...see him as one of their own. The guy who made it big and still gets them. But I think you have to look at them on a case by case basis really.
  • The stars and the story sound like either an intersting movie or a very bad movie waiting to be made.
