I have had the unfortunate pleasure working with people just like Wikus. These are people who perform their duties in accordance with what they "think" the role entails or perform to impress peers. The actor plays this character to perfection. Now I have a new name for these sorts. "Wikuses"

It's great to see that a Blu-ray like this features "features" of such high caliber. THIS is why I went Blu-ray last year and I hope that other feature films will take the time and effort to build in value like this. It makes the step up in price for the Blu-ray all that easier and what I want as a Blu-ray practitioner.

Thanks for a detailed and fulfilling review.

I just viewed District 9 and was very impressed—even blown away—no pun intended. What blew me away beyond the originality of the story, the Weta special effects, the hugely effective mixing of formats, styles and genres, was the blistering intelligence of director, co-writer Neill Blomkamp. After viewing Uruguay’s Ataque de Panico by Fede Alvarez, I thought the Messiah had arrived, and from of a Third World South American Commercial Director no less, but after listening to the Neill Blomkamp Commentary and viewing his film twice, it looks like that embodiment must belong to this Nordic Commercial Director out of Johannesburg—by way of Vancouver. Moreover, the film was rife with great homages (Alien, Aliens, ET, Transformers, Total Recall, Iron Man, just to name a quick half dozen.), but being who he is, Blomkamp only mentioned one slight Speilbergian reference; otherwise you would have thought this was the first Sci-Fi conceptualized and executed since Georges Méliès’ A Trip to The Moon.
A note to all you budding filmmakers who want to be rich, learn and master Special Effects like Alvarez and Blomkamp, then write a Horror Sci-Fi using a classic war/battle, allegory, myth, folktale, or social/political conflict, (like forced mobilization) and write a sci-fi based on it—got it? Good.
