Daily Diversion: Old School Friday the 13th
Daily Diversion By Robert Fure on February 13, 2009 | Be the First To CommentWhen I was tasked with picking an “old school” Friday the 13th clip, I immediately became torn – what was old school? What was it that makes a Jason kill memorable? Where would I draw the line? Since Friday the 13th Part 4 was called “The Final Chapter” and all the films after that went into way more supernatural territory, I decided that was my cut off.
So the above clip is my choice – a great Jason Voorhees kill for many reasons. First, Mark is a good kid. He’s in a wheelchair, but that can’t keep him down. He swears he’ll walk again, he’s training for some athletic event, and he’s got a positive attitude and high spirits. Even more, he has been flirting with Vicki, who has gone to freshen up before virtually guaranteeing Mark she’d be sleeping with him that night. His life is looking good, right until Jason hits him in the face with a machete with such force that his chair is sent rolling off a deck and down a full flight of stairs.
Honorable mentions would have to be from Part III, when Rick gets his head crushed and his eyeball flies out or when a kid doing a handstand is cut down the middle, starting at the groin, by Jason, who is by now sporting his infamous hockey mask.
