It just gets old hearing about how great QT is when the final results of most of his movies are disappointing at best. I get tired of seeing trailers of movies that are suppose to be packed with action and 90% of it is filler. To me that is false advertising and an out right lie, which is nothing more than bait and switch. QT is given a pass every time he does it because it is suppose to be "Art".

Great article. I agree with you on how QT uses the power of cinema to make a statement regarding the war. I wonder if in a day and age, if how people perceive history is more important considering people who actually fought in the war are dying.

For more on these thoughts check out my article
www.thislalife.com

Not that I care to defend Palmer all that much, but I think it's because your first comment belittled the article into the realm of fanboyism without really explaining what you disagree with.

I wouldn't say QT's success rate is 50/50. I'd say it was lower. Obviously that's on a personal level, but I have never been able to really get behind his movies. That being said, Inglourious Basterds is a great movie, and it fits well within the political theater that it's attempting to become a part of.

That being said, again, I also got really tired of the cinema-ego-stroking in it, but reading this at least makes me see it in a different light.

The thing I did notice most about the film is that the influences that QT points to the most are often poorly acted, poorly scripted movies (that are fun in their own right) that have wanton violence up to a half dozen times within 90 minutes. Basterds mimics this sort of structure, but QT is far, far better at writing dialog and his actors are world-class. I'd like to look at the movie as a glossy version of a true pulp war film. The only divergence is that the movie didn't completely focus on the Men on a Mission. In fact, it barely did. But it's still a really fantastic film.

So let me get this straight so that I don't appear to be a "fanboy". Since I did not agree with you on the merits of why QT should be thought of as a icon in the same annals as the directors of "The Longest Day", "Patton", "Sands of Iwo Jima", or even current works like Eastwoods "Flags of Our Fathers", I must have misread your article. While it was well written that doesn't change the fact that I disagree with you on most points of QT's work.

I'm not sure exactly what giddy fanboy article you read but it certainly wasn't this post. A lot of thought and research goes into this column, so try to at least meet me halfway next time by actually paying attention to the points I've made. This isn't a review or an argument that a certain film/director is good/bad, it's evidence for a certain film's role within the context of history and culture...but thank you for that insightful feedback regardless

Wow, that was a very long stroking of QT ego to get the end result. We get it, you like QT and think he is really good at what he does. Never mind that his track record is 50/50 on success/failure. But I guess we all have a school girl crush once in our lives.
