1960 was also the year that Roger Corman, looking at the horror revival spearheaded by the UK's Hammer Films, classed up his act; where in 1959 he was directing Wasp Woman aand Attack of the Giant Leeches, '60 brought The Fall of the House of Usher, the launch of his Poe cycle -- a series that brought Corman enough success that he could succor the generation of filmmakers who would transform filmmaking altogether in the 70s and 80s.

Also released in 1960 was Jigoku out of Japan, which may contain some of the earliest gore effects comparable to modern cinema, and has a really torturous depiction of hell. There was also Bava's Black Sunday released that year.

I myself have been a great proponent of "Peeping Tom" ever since I saw it years ago. I actually shelled out the money to buy it from Criterion. Bravo on this article. You sir, do not sound like a film school reject.

Great piece. Truth be told, I've never seen Psycho, partly because the iconic moments are repeated so much that I feel the only reason to watch it is to say that I have...and how uneventful is that. But Peeping Tom. One of my favorite films! And I'm definitely putting Franju's film on my Netflix. I can't believe I've never seen this before - it sounds right up my alley.

I believe!

To think that something as brilliant as Psycho and something as (equally brilliant) pulpy and exploitative as Peeping Tom came out in the same year is really great. I fucking love movies.
