Coroner’s Report: Horror Round Up

As someone utterly obsessed with horror flicks, I always dreamed of taking The Coroner’s Report to a higher place. A place above just movie reviews, a heavenly column that would include news updates, essays, previews, and, yes, reviews. Today we take one step in that direction with the first Horror Round Up, a collection of cool Horror News that has come up recently.
Friday the 13th (Platinum Dunes)
We all saw the first appearance of Jason Voorhees a few days back, but he was just some looming figure in the distance in a relatively yawn-tastic first glimpse. Not so anymore, friends, as a few images have surface of the killer getting ready to do what he does best - kill. The images first popped up at ENI, but have since disappeared from there and repopulated the net like wildfire across the different outlets.
Thoughts? Pretty decent. He looks scary, smaller than he has been lately, but he’s packing a hatchet so that’s totally awesome. And despite this being a sort of relaunch of the series, he’s already got his hockey mask, which I’m psyched for. I’ve got faith in this project and so far nothing has come along to challenge that faith. Stay tuned for interviews and updates on Friday the 13th from our San Diego Comic Con coverage!
A Nightmare on Elm Street (New Line Films)
News came Wednesday that Wesley Strick will be writing the relaunch of the popular Freddy Krueger vehicles A Nightmare on Elm Street for New Line. Strick has written one of my favorite films, Arachnobia, one film I thought was ok, Doom, and a handful of others of varying quality including Cape Fear, Wolf, and The Saint. This isn’t a bad choice, though I’m not cutting myself with excitement. Good news though - the film will stay fairly true to what we know, with Freddy Krueger being a child serial killer who returns with a burned face and razor gloved hand to strike terror into his victims while they sleep. The film will supposedly remain dark and delve deeper into the psychology of dreams and give us a better look into Krueger himself, all while setting up young teenagers to die. Yessssss!
While no official release is planned, early word seems to put the film in Winter, 2009. I haven’t heard too much about this remake, though with the quality of Nightmare flicks rapidly falling off in the original run, I’m not opposed to a remake. The only real downside is that there are no plans, currently, to put original star Robert Englund in the sweater and hat for the remake.
The Haunting of Molly Hartley (Liddell Entertainment)
Opening on October 31st, this is a film that slipped under my radar until just recently. The film follows Molly Hartley who, while trying to adjust to the new teen dynamic as a transfer student in high school, begins to undergo a frightening transformation. The film stars Chace Crawford (Gossip Girl) and the beautiful Haley Bennett (Music and Lyrics).
While the details of this are still vague, I’m interested enough to keep an ear out for any more news. The provided images in the press release are so-so, but it is always nice to see the blood flow.
