I would guess that a lot of the Twilight-fanatic hate comes from the fact that basically these girls hold up a bit of a subconscious mirror to the other 'geeks' of different stripes, and they don't like what they see. The Twilight fans seem much more vocal, shrill, and frighteningly obsessed…that's just the way they express it. So, as a guy, that over the top behavior is cringe-inducing, but it makes the geek think 'do I act anything like that?'. The same way you might see a 400-lb guy in a tight Superman outfit and snicker. It's something you would never do…hopefully. It's all the level to which each geek allows his particular interests/obsessions to manifest themselves.
To quote Helen Hunt in 'As Good As It Gets'…”Do you have any control over how creepy you allow yourself to get?”. For some folks, the answer is 'nope'.
