I agree entirely with your rage directed toward the ever-expanding lexicon of reasons that belie a movie's rating. This is especially notable when compared to the rating system for TV.

The season premiere of “Sons of Anarchy” (a show of which I have only recently become aware, but find rather enjoyable) was rated TV-MA for “Adult Language, Sexual Situations, and Strong Violence” – this did not, in any way, prepare the viewing public of the gang rape that occurred at the end of the episode. Furthermore, Don Draper randomly finger-slammed a married woman on “Mad Men” last season because she pissed him off; while back in 2003, Vic Mackey burned a man's face on a kitchen stove in graphic detail, only to receive a disclaimer for “Strong Violence.”

The worst double-edged sword in this regard is the term “graphic nudity,” which made me excited to see some bush, when all I end up seeing is some dude's dong next to John C. Reilly's head. Not cool.

The term “MIND POLICE” comes to mind whenever I see the MPAA on a rating or poster. Or was that something they implanted.

Yes.

And I still blame Janet Jackson's boob. We were heading the right direction, then Timberlake had to get himself a handful of Janet. Now film and TV are so cowardly, they all but sacrifice virgins on the alter of the regulatory agencies.

However, I believe it will swing back the other way again someday. It may just take a decade or two.

I think any movie that contains an unhealthy food product should be given an NC-17 rating, afterall our kids are obese these days. Think of all the hearts it would save.
