Ben Affleck Supports the Congo. The Daily Diversion.

We are well aware of your general distaste for our political musings, but don’t think that won’t stop us from joining with our friends and neighbors in Hollywood to support worthy causes. Today’s cause comes by way of a short film directed by Ben Affleck — you remember him, he’s the guy who used to act but has now found his place behind the camera. Affleck has teamed with the UNHCR and Rolling Stones front man Mick Jagger to produce “Gimme Shelter,” a film intended to “help raise funds and awareness about the crisis in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the work of the UN refugee agency.”

Seen above, “Gimme Shelter” explores many of the atrocities that have been happening in the eastern regions of the DRC, including genocide, rape and mass exodus. It is one of those things that reminds us of how good we all have it — that we can browse the web all day and talk about movies, taking to them as a part of our lives. There’s nothing wrong with understanding that and doing what we can to help improve the lives of those who are less fortunate.

/soapbox. If you’d like to find out more, head over to the official UNHCR website.

Have a video suggestion for The Daily Diversion? Of course you do. Just send that junk via electronic mail to Editors@FSR.

  • Yeah, it's pretty heart-breaking.
  • Yeah it terrible that Hollywood is just now focusing on something that has been happening for over 40 years. Good timing there Ben.

Here's a clue though, throwing money at the problem has never made one difference in Africa. The only way to change the situation there is to over throw the warlords and destroy their conscript armies.
