DVD’s I Bought This Week - December 18, 2007

Posted by Brian C. Gibson (brian@filmschoolrejects.com) on December 18, 2007

A wise man once said “It’s not just about seeing Star Wars two weeks before everyone else. You’ve gotta plow through crap like Marie Antoinette and Catwoman as well.” I have the fortune of being able to see all of the films that I want, and find out that they are only worth one viewing (or less) before I would willingly pay for the DVD…and subsequently end up hating myself later. But for every The Whoopee Boys there has to be an Indiana Jones, and because of the great films I am able to put myself further in debt every week.

DVD’s I Bought - Week of December 18th

The Simpsons Movie
It was funny to see how many people that call themselves Simpsons fans say things like “the movie was just like one big episode!” Well if you are a fan, one big episode will still be awesome, and it was. I loved The Simpsons Movie, and gladly added it to my collection.
Once
One of the best “musicals” I have ever seen. A beautiful film, and an amazing soundtrack. I loved this movie from the moment I saw the trailer. Go out and buy it, now, you won’t regret it.
Halloween - Unrated Director’s Cut
While some people saw no need to remake one of the greatest horror movies of all time, I say to them “did the Mona Lisa need to be painted? No, but it came out pretty damn awesome.” Halloween is one of the fastest paced, scariest movies in years. Rob Zombie, while he may not be an amazing director, gets better with each film. Halloween is a must buy for horror fans.
Balls of Fury - HD-DVD
I had a chance to interview the director, writers and two of the stars of the film and their energy around Balls of Fury was infectious. Expect a fun, slapstick kung-fu ping pong movie, of the likes you have never seen. Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon promised me that this might go down as the best kung-fu / table tennis movie ever.
Braveheart - Special Collector’s Edition
But they will never take my freedom…to buy as many editions of this fantastic film as I want. The initial release of Braveheart was pretty bare-bones, and this edition is a great piece for anyone’s collection.
National Treasure - 2 Disc Collector’s Edition
In a movie all about secrets, it was surprising that the initial DVD release didn’t contain more supplemental features or easter eggs. I expects that this 2 disc version probably contains more than enough to get anyone amped up for this month’s release of National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets.
DVD’s I Didn’t Buy - Week of December 18th

Stardust
I know this film was critically acclaimed, but I don’t know if I can deal with a De Niro pirate.
Rush Hour 3
Brett Ratner will forever be known in my heart as the guy who ruined X-Men. For that, his DVD’s will die on bargain shelves before they will ever hit my DVD player.

ha and the reason i’m going to even see Stardust is because DeNiro is in it. I see all his films.
