Darfur Now DVD Giveaway

It seems that everyone is quick to jump all over Hollywood-types whenever they make a movie about a cause. Al Gore turned Hollywood, made a movie and ended up as the butt-end of a few jokes. The same can be said for plenty of actors who take their causes to the big screen — sometimes no matter how noble the cause, the hate will rain down. Then there are cases like the film Darfur Now, which I am told is a very compelling film from actor and activist Don Cheadle about the genocide that is happening as we speak in Sudan’s western region of Darfur.

The film is billed as a call to action, and thanks to us hooking up with Warner Home Video, this is a call that you have a chance to receive absolutely free. We have scored five (5) copies of the critically acclaimed film to give away to our dedicated (and generally good looking) readership. All you have to do is be a subscriber to our daily email updates, a service that delivers the best of FSR right to your email inbox every morning (sans spam, of course). If you are not already a subscriber, you can do so via the form below:

Enter your email address:

Once you are a subscriber, whether you just signed up or you’ve been with us for a while, all you need to do in order to be considered is to answer a simple question in the comment area below. That question is:

If you were able to make your own “call to action” style documentary, what would your cause be, and why?

Winners will be chosen on Saturday June 7th and contacted by email shortly thereafter.

Lets find Osama Bin Laden. If we found the guy I think alot of americans would sleep better at night and we would save some face as a country. I mean how hard is it to find a 6′6″ guy on dialysis who lives in a cave somewhere?

anonymous says:

The near impossibility of childless adults who aren’t elderly or *completely* disabled to get any type of assistance when they’re in need. Most states exclude these people completely from all but perhaps $80/month in food stamps if they’re lucky. And private charities are so overwhelmed that they always help the households with children first, and if there’s nothing left for the childless, too bad. There’s a huge incentive to have welfare babies in this system, and a lot of working poor adults falling thru the cracks, unable to get any help until their health degenerates (from lack of basic care) to complete, irreversible disability.

Stephen Saunders says:

Wow… I totally admire the post by Anonymous. I’ll chime in with agreement on everything they said.

Andrew Gordon says:

I’d do one on the gouging of the oil and gas industry and how the country is changing due to the rising cost of driving your vehicle

Kathy Scott says:

To get Americans off their fat rear ends and start walking or riding bikes.

Amber G says:

I would make a documentary about the human trafficking trade in eastern Europe. I think it’s an issue that most people, especially in the United States, have never really seen before. Publicity, especially for innocent children, could really help put pressure on the governments to crack down on the slave trade.

Denyse says:

The cause would be gov’t OVERSPENDING- and I’d get back to taking care of MY country and It’s legal citizens: we ALL need food, jobs, medical care, ect- we live here and there’s too many suffering.

Or maybe I’d do gun violence- ya know some kids grow up watching their peers and family die RIGHT HERE IN THE USA and belive their only routes in life ate selling or doing drugs!

Megan B. says:

I would want to do a documentary and really try to clear up misconceptions that Americans have regarding the Middle East. I was fortunate enough as an American white Christian woman to live in the Middle East for years, immerse myself in their culture, and I was accepted wholeheartedly and always treated graciously. The men took great care to treat me with respect. You would never know that with the way that Arabs are portrayed in the American media, to my great dismay. I would love to really do a bold, accurate portrayal of the vast majority of the Middle East.

Shaun Wallner says:

My cause would definitely be the Economy, i so afraid to see what its going like 20 years from now unless we change something.

Geri says:

I like the idea of a doc. focused on the oil industry…it probably wouldn’t do much good but it could give governments a much-need kick in the rear.

Joan Greaton says:

The health insurance industry. Medical needs are a fundamental right for all U.S citizens. Not just those that can affordable the ridiculous premiums.

Thank you for the contest.

Linda Lansford says:

My cause would be the Domestic Violence. Families should not be hurt.

Linda Pinto says:

The cause I would document is getting Americans to change to non-fossil fuels and not rely on something like coal.

Anne says:

I live in Victoria, BC which is on Vancouver Island in BC Canada. To get to Vancouver BC we take a ferry ride of over an hour and a half.

I think if I had to choose a subject for a documentary regarding my city and the city of Vancouver it would be about the vast number of homeless, mentally ill, drug addicted people living on the streets in both cities and the lack of social service agencies to help these people.

Years ago, BC closed its largest Psychiatric Hospital and the majority of the people that were hospitalized there, ended up on the streeet. I feel ashamed that this country, this province and these two cities have allowed this to happen; we as a society should be judged on how we treat our citizens who cannot stand up for themselves.

I also believe that regarding the drug addicted people, there should be free and very long stay rehab programs. There is a Reason people are on drugs and usually its to escape some pain that they have endured, be it emotional or physical pain. (believe me, I know as I am a recovering addict who has emotional issues) People that are addicted to drugs, CANNOT get better in 30 days!! To save our society, we need to invest $$ now to PREVENT and HEAL people before they turn to drugs and alcohol. I believe that in the end, it would cost less money to do it this way, compared to the bandaid way its handled today!

Housing here is extremely expensive and there is not enough affordable housing for people who are at or below the poverty level. It is our duty, to care for the sick and the poor. We need to look at ways to build affordable housing.

Well, I’ll get down off of my soap box now as I could go on and on all day! This is a brilliant way to win this dvd btw!

israel y says:

free health care for all, thanks for the contest

theresa demars says:

COUNT ME I AND GOOD LUCK TO ALL

Susan Smith says:

judy brittle says:

i would find out how the government is trying to run this country by making so many rules. it seems the rights of americans are being taken away and i thought this was the land of the free.

jason fiske says:

My call to action would be a documentary on the number of people in our prison syste. I do believe in justice and harsh prison sentences for our criminals, but boy o boy, we sure have overcrowding. What can we do with it?

Barbara Fox says:

I would do a documentary showing what it really looks like to see a pile of animals gassed because their owners were too stupid to take care of them properly. I work for an animal rescue group, fostering pets, in a rural community. Last week alone, we got calls about 73 kittens! Most communities have lowcost spay neuter programs. WAKE UP people!!

William Wright Jr says:

I would investigate why the leftists in this country won’t allow us to drill in for oil in Alaska. Drill NOW!

Anita Yancey says:

I would do one on “Police”, because they don’t get enough respect.

isaac dilbert says:

My call to action would be all about hollywood writers, and how they feel the need to adapt certain novels, comics and other artist work and tweak it for a more acceptable audience. Its called art for a reason, originals should not be changed. Keep the stories that are written many of the comic book movies that are out are drastically changed for hollywood, and then people blame the actors for the poor sales, its not bad acting. Its bad, lazy and poorly written.

daniel herrera says:

domestic violence and its impact on the family…including abusive teen relationships and parental relationships

Stop gun violence, because guns kill over 30,000 Americans every year, and 8 children and teens every day.

I guess it would be environmental in nature. I would like to see efforts being made to make sure our national parks are being maintained and kept up as well as possible. They are truly treasures that shouldn’t be ignored.

John M says:

I would do a film on politics. I want to know if people are voting for a certain someone because they want change, do they in fact know what the “change” will be.

Jim W. says:

Obesity in America, it’s an alarmingly overlooked problem

Carolyn Ellis says:

I know it is old news, but we can’t say enough about spaying and neutering our pets. We see too many strays around that are starving, or get hit by cars. I think a good documentary would bring the idea home.

Lara Aleff says:

I would make a documentary about the rampant sex trade and sex slavery in Dubai.

Edgardo San Diego says:

My call to action is the growing population in developing countries specially Philippines where the reality of poverty overshadow with the religious belief that having a lot of children is the country needed.

Sarah Stern says:

Alternative fuels!

Kristen Hendricks says:

If I was able to make my own “call to action” style documentary it would be called The Forgotten Ones. It would be about the middle-class in this country many of whom are struggling so much financially. I would draw attention to their struggles in hopes of getting politicians to do something about those struggles.

christopher h says:

personal rights and personal resposibility - no one wants to do their own thing or take responsibility for their own actions, they’d rather the government act as both their mommy and daddy

mike kittle says:

My project would have to prostitution and human sex trafficking worldwide. The topic is taboo in many areas, and some of these women and men disappear and are never seen again as in the publicized instance of Natalee Holloway, and her case is just one in millions that happen on a yearly basis. Not only does it effect the people involved but whole families and communities are effected by it in some areas. Other parts of the world have few ways of coping and few resources to stop trafficking. There are so many issues that need awareness that don’t get enough.

Buddy Garrett says:

My “Call to Action” documentary would focus in all the food additives our food manufacturers are putting into our food and the consequences on our health.

Carrie Baird says:

My cause would be to help animals have a better lot in life because they can’t speak out for themselves.

kathleen yohanna says:

I would like to make a documentary advocating compliance with the welfare laws in our country. There are so many people that can’t get good health care because our system is jammed up with people who don’t need it or deserve it.

Melanie Miller says:

My cause would be the elderly and their medical needs. I believe many are going without proper medical care and without their medication.

Going green - how the average family can go green. It is hard when many of us are on a budget and are living paycheck to paycheck. It is a daunting task, but in small steps we can all make a difference.

Charlene Kuser says:

My call to action would be to change the criminal system.A program
where we could change how the system deals with repeat offenders,
so they won’t get out and hurt more children

Lily Kwan says:

I would make a documentary about animals in shelters because I want to reduce the numbers of animals being euthanized for lack of space.

Jessica says:

My cause would definitely be for healthcare, particular family planning resources like affordable birth control. Too many young women in this country get pulled into a cycle of poverty because of lack of eduction and affordable contraceptive options.

Zipporah Sandler says:

The oil industry…

kathleen yohanna says:

I would make a documentary about greed, the reason behind most wars and suffering in the world. It would site historical situations and show the reason behind certain actions of agression. I would then give strong “hints” about present day problems and suggest that the viewer make some conclusions. That is all the public is ready for right now. The film would include ways to contact people and organizations that can direct them toward ways to participate in making the world a better place.

Ron Haugen says:

I would like to cover global socio economics, and I know this sounds like a very broad topic and it is if it is not covered in the right way. What I mean is why can’t we all be on an even keel as it were economically instead of words like third world how could we be one world. Just a thought?

Felicia says:

My call to action would be the lack of education are children are getting. We really need to start paying our teachers more, and make classrooms smaller. I believe we also need to put more effort in making sure our children do not got lost in a non english speaking enviroment. I live in AZ and so much is put on teaching non english speaking children, that our own children are getting the short end of the stick,
