The psychological thriller The Number 23 stars Jim Carrey as a man whose life unravels after he comes into contact with an obscure book titled “The Number 23″. As he reads the book, he becomes increasingly convinced that it is based on his own life. His obsession with the number 23 starts to consume him, and he begins to realize the book forecasts far graver consequences for his life than he could have ever imagined. (Official Studio Synopsis)
Sounds pretty freaky, eh? If you haven’t heard of The Number 23 yet, then you should have. Jim Carrey puts away his funny guy persona to wax dramatic in a way that would scare the hell out of Truman Burbank (The Truman Show) and give Joel Barish (Eternal Sunshine) nightmares that he would pay to have erased. From the looks of the trailer (which can be seen by clicking HERE) the film has a very dark, edgy feel to it which seems to work — at least for the sake of getting people excited about the film. For one, I am very interested to see it, as Jim Carrey will be delving into a role that he has not yet tackled.
But never mind my excitement about the flick, I am just a critic. I may end up slamming it when it releases on February 23rd. The studio, New Line Cinemas, are the ones who are especially excited about the release. It sports a sure-handed director (Joel Schumacher), a solid cast (Carrey, Virginia Madsen, and Danny Huston) and is being released early in the year — where bad films come to die. So if it shows up with the quality that the trailer would lead us to believe, it will be a definite early year winner.
To show off their excitement (and our ability to woo the studios into giving you free contraband), the fine folks at New Line have arranged for a slick prize package just for you, the FSR Readers! Yay for you! Check out the details and the obligatory studio mandated entry form below. For more info on The Number 23, check out the film’s Official Site.
