I sure love me the slashers and when you combine slasher stylings with a hot female protagonist, I’m in 100%.  Which is why I made my way to the Devil’s Due Publishing Panel at Comic-Con this year to hear what was new with the movie adaptation of Hack/Slash.  Unfortunately, the answer was not much is up.

On the panel was comic creator and writer Tim Seeley, director Todd Lincoln, screen writer Justin Marks, and a few other notables.  First, some good news.  Tim Seeley is heavily involved with the production and talks to director Lincoln more than his own mother, a good start.  The film will establish the origin of Cassie Hack, while also working in some new story points, not covered in the comic.  Lincoln comes off as a very legitimate fan of the comic and the slasher vibe and is intent on making a blood-soaked, hard-R, practical effects laden film.  Yes please!  He described it as somewhat of a “blood-soaked buddy movie,” referring to Cassie and her compatriot Vlad, the towering beast of a man that accompanies her.

Now the bad news – shooting has not started.  They say they’re getting ready and casting short lists have been created, but we probably won’t be seeing this flick on screen for 1-2 years, which is a tragedy.  I’m excited for this adaptation because I love the book.  No casting news yet, but I’m ok with them taking their time.  A perfect Cassie will make or break this film.

One thing I can tell you for certain – this film will be blood-soaked.  The gentlemen on the panel must have used that term at least 6 times and that is a good thing.  Let it rain red!  For example, Lincoln also said the film was “comedy meets blood-soaked horror.”  If you’ve read the comic, you’ll realize this is note perfect; if you haven’t read the comic, pick it up!  It’s sexy, bloody, nasty, and naughty.  The most current issue even features the Suicide Girls and plenty of naked fun!

It was also revealed at this panel that Devils Due Publishing has teamed with Trigger Street to integrate comics into the TriggerStreet.com system, giving up and coming writers and artists a chance to get reviews and a chance at the big shot by posting their work.  Kevin Spacey joined the panel to help make the announcement which is surely a good thing for all aspiring comic creators out there.
