We know that you are all live busy lives; it explains why you never call us anymore. And while we understand that everyone is hustlin’ and bustlin’ all over town, just trying to make a livin’, we know that you also want to catch a flick on the weekends. On top of that, we know that since your time is valuable, you don’t want to waste it on another cinematic turd. Therefore, we’ve created the “Weekend Movie Cheat Sheet” to help you make those snap decisions. Need a date movie? A popcorn flick? A thriller? We’ve got you covered — and we’ve got you in and out faster than you can say “Hey, those Film School Rejects really know what they are talkin’ about…”

What type of movie are you looking for?

A Popcorn Movie… and a Family Flick!

We recommend: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Why: Indiana Jones is back in what could be one of the definitive “popcorn movies” of 2008. It was characters like Indiana Jones and directors like Steven Spielberg in the 1980s that ushered in the dawn of the big summer blockbuster. In this round, Harrison Ford is back as an aging Dr. Jones, but he still gets to have a fun adventure with a new sidekick (Shia LaBeouf) and a friendly faced leading lady (Karen Allen as Marion Ravenwood). And sure, this one isn’t going to make you forget about the legendary Indy trilogy that preceded it, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a whole lot of fun. It’s entertaining, nostalgic and well worth the price of a ticket and a big tub of butter-soaked popcorn.

As well, we have also dubbed this one the family flick to see this week, so take the kids, feed them some sugar and enjoy.

A Date Movie…

We recommend: What Happens in Vegas

Why: It seems that Fox has surprised us with What Happens in Vegas, which stars notorious chick flick actors Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher. Sure, they are the ones on the poster, but it is a stellar supporting cast that includes Rob Corddry, Lake Bell, Dennis Farina and Dennis Miller that really makes this film worth seeing. Be ready to have that “When are we getting married on a whim and winning $3 million on a slot machine?” talk with your lady afterwards, but otherwise this should be an easy date movie choice, should you pass on Indiana Jones.

A Thriller…

We recommend: Staying home…

Why?: If it is a real thriller you are after, your best bet is to wait until next week when The Strangers hits theaters. This week there is a whole pile of nothing, as no one wanted to go toe-to-toe with the man in the fedora and leather jacket.

A Take-a-Chance Flick…

We recommend: Son of Rambow

Why: This indie darling from Sundance 2007 finally made its limited release a few weeks back and this weekend sees it sneak into more markets across the country. From director Garth Jennings, Rambow tells the story of two unlikely young friends who find themselves working together to make their own version of the 80s classic First Blood. It combines some great performances from two talented young actors with a really sweet and imaginative story. For children of the 80s, this could make for an excellent companion piece to that other 80s movie that came out this week. What’s that one again? — oh right, Indiana Jones.

So there you have it, the quick and easy way to go to make all of your movie-related decisions this weekend. Check back every Friday morning for more of the Weekend Movie Cheat Sheet. We’ll see you at the movies…

A Popcorn Movie…

We recommend: Iron Man

Why: The Summer movie season is all about popcorn movies. In fact, for movielovers across the world, this weekend marks the start of 3 consecutive months of awesome popcorn purchase inducing cinema. And what better way to get it started with one of the best-constructed, most entertaining superhero movies to ever hit the screen. Yes, Iron Man, with Robert Downey Jr. in the lead and Jon Favreau at the helm, is that good. So good, in fact, that it is enough to not only entertain you, but it may also instill some hope for the rest of the summer movie season. Break out those big tubs of popcorn, because this is what it’s all about!

A Family Flick…

We recommend: Speed Racer

Why: I don’t want you to go into this with the wrong idea, so I will be upfront and say that Speed Racer is a lot longer than it needs to be. That still won’t stop your kinds, who have already brainwashed by the intense marketing campaign, from wanting to see it. The Wachowski Brothers, who previously brought us The Matrix, show us that even a kids movie can be an intense thrill-ride and that even Christina Ricci, now 28, can still play a cute teenager. If that isn’t reason enough for the adults to round up the little kiddies and head to the cineplex, I don’t know what is…

A Date Movie…

We recommend: What Happens in Vegas

Why: Last week the American public was duped into thinking that Made of Honor was going to be a solid date movie. It wasn’t. Thankfully, Fox has surprised us with What Happens in Vegas, which stars notorious chick flick actors Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher. Sure, they are the ones on the poster, but it is a stellar supporting cast that includes Rob Corddry, Lake Bell, Dennis Farina and Dennis Miller that really makes this film worth seeing. Be ready to have that “When are we getting married on a whim and winning $3 million on a slot machine?” talk with your lady afterwards, but otherwise this should be a rather smooth

A Thriller…

We recommend: Iron Man

Why: Yeah, that’s right — Iron Man again. It really is that good.

A Take-a-Chance Flick…

We recommend: Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Why: It appears that most of the options on the table above have been rehashed from recent weeks, and it’s true — there isn’t much in the way of new movies for you to choose from. But alas, there are still a few good ones out there should you decide to do the dishonorable thing and skip Iron Man. One solid choice is Forgetting Sarah Marshall. This Judd Apatow-produced comedy falls somewhere between Walk Hard and Superbad, with the laughs coming in more on the Superbad side. It’s not for the kids, as it contains some dudity (male nudity), but that doesn’t mean the big kids can’t enjoy it — and they will.

So there you have it, the quick and easy way to go to make all of your movie-related decisions this weekend. Check back every Friday morning for more of the Weekend Movie Cheat Sheet. We’ll see you at the movies…

A Date Movie…

We recommend: Baby Mama

Why: I feel it necessary to preface this one with the fact that this is not a good movie for a first date. It may raise questions about kids, marriage, etc., so if you aren’t ready to have that little talk, you may want to go see Harold and Kumar. But if you are okay discussing those topics with your sweetie, this movie is a great date night flick. On top of satisfying the cinematic needs of both woman and man, this thing delivers the laughs by the ton. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are both great in a film that reminds us a bit of Knocked Up, just a lot less raunchy.

A Thriller…

We recommend: Prom Night

Why: Audiences have kept Prom Night’s box office pretty strong over its first few weeks, proving to us that it is worthy. At least, it is the most worthy of all the thrillers out there right now — but that isn’t saying much. Sure, its just another in a long line of hit or miss remakes, but as our own Kevin Carr said, “I was surprised at the fact that I really didn’t get that bored with it.” You probably won’t be bored either — but we will admit that this probably isn’t the best weekend for a thrill-seeker.

A Family Flick…

We recommend: The Forbidden Kingdom

Why: Most of us would say, “Cool. Jackie Chan and Jet Li kicking the shit out of each other… Sounds badass.” And it is badass, for the few moments that Chan and Li spend fighting each other. Outside of that, this is a straight kids movie with all kinds of lighthearted shenanigans. For example, there is a scene where Jet Li actually urinates on Jackie Chan. And what kid doesn’t like a good pee-pee scene? Aside from that, there isn’t much else out there for the family — by now Horton Hears a Who and Nim’s Island have run their course. Beyond being a solid flick, The Forbidden Kingdom pretty much wins by default.

A Popcorn Movie…

We recommend: Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay

Why: Not a kids flick, but you already know that. The stoners are back with their patented brand of idiocy in a film that almost lives up to the hilarities of its predecessor. John Cho and Kal Penn fit into the characters of Harold and Kumar just as well the second time around, and with Neil Patrick Harris back for a second turn, this film can’t do much wrong. Sure, the jokes feel a bit regurgitated by the end, but ultimately this one doesn’t fail to deliver some laughs. So if you’re looking for some silly, mindless comedy — or you are high — this one is an easy choice.

A Take-a-Chance Flick…

We recommend: Smart People

Why: We don’t see anything else out there worth recommending, so we are sticking with Smart People. Smart People is one of those movies that reminds us of 2007’s little indie that could (Juno). Not just because it stars Ellen Page, but because it combines an incredibly smart screenplay (pun intended) with some great performances from a top-notch cast (that includes Page, Dennis Quaid, Sarah Jessica Parker and the incomparable Thomas Hayden Church). If you are looking to take a risk this weekend, Smart People is a great bet.

So there you have it, the quick and easy way to go to make all of your movie-related decisions this weekend. Check back every Friday morning for more of the Weekend Movie Cheat Sheet. We’ll see you at the movies…

A Date Movie…

We recommend: Leatherheads

Why: This one is such a tough call, as there aren’t any really solid date movies out in theaters at the moment. As well, this one is being marketed as a movie about football. But don’t let the poster fool you, this is unequivocally a date movie, it only uses football as a backdrop. George Clooney and Renee Zellweger hit the screen and deliver solid performances, good enough at least, to satisfy your obligatory pre-sex-turndown ritual of dinner and a movie. As well, it is missable enough that you won’t be too disappointed if, for some reason, your sweetie decides that he/she wants to neck through the whole thing.

A Thriller…

We recommend: The Ruins

Why: Yes, we are passing on Prom Night with a vengeance. As our own Robert Fure mentioned earlier in the week as part of his Boiling Point column, it is sad to see that Hollywood has moved on from remaking classic horror flicks to remaking not-so-classic flicks as well. Prom Night falls into the latter category, as one of those movies that should have been left in the 80s. The Ruins, on the other hand, delivers some serious skin-crawling terror in a fairly fresh manner. And, for what its worth, Laura Ramsey is very hot, even when she is all bloodied up.

A Popcorn Movie…

We recommend: 21

Why: Audiences have picked this one as top of the class for two straight weeks and there is certainly a reason why. It is heavy on a kickin’ soundtrack, a sexy cast and not so heavy on plot, making 21 an easy choice if you are looking to head out for 2 hours of relatively mindless entertainment. Combining the glitz and glamour of Vegas with the panache of a low-rate Ocean’s 11 (or Ocean’s 6 in this case), this one will easily satisfy your need for sexy young college students ripping off the man.

A Family Flick…

We recommend: Horton Hears a Who

Why: At this point you have probably figured out that there isn’t much in the way of a good movie hitting theaters this Friday, therefore we are forced to recommend some films that have been out a while. And while Nim’s Island did hit theaters more recently than Horton Hears a Who, it just wasn’t that well received, either by critics or audiences. Therefore, we have no choice but to stick with the Whorific animated adventure that has already claimed $133 million at the box office. Our next choice would be Nim’s Island, but don’t say we didn’t warn you.

A Take-a-Chance Flick…

We recommend: Smart People

Why: This is our most fun “cheat sheet” category because it allows us to recommend something that you might not have thought of on your own. No offense, but some films just don’t reach the mainstream audience, even though they deserve nothing less. This is where we would have put Juno back when it was only in 500 theaters, and look what happened there. Oh, and speaking of Juno, Smart People is one of those movies that reminds us of 2007’s little indie that could.
