For those who follow Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report, last night’s Primetime Emmy Awards marked a very important moment in Colbert Nation History. The Peabody Award Winning Stephen Colbert has been nominated for three straight years for the Emmy for Outstanding Individual Performance In A Variety Or Music Program. And for the third year in a row, he was nominated against some notables like Jon Stewart and David Letterman, as well as a wild card.

In 2006, his bid was upset by aging singer Barry Manilow; in 2007, a similar fate was dealt by another aging singer, Tony Bennett. And this year, which seemed to be Colbert’s year, he was handed yet another epic defeat by an aging entertainer: comedian Don Rickles. And though The Colbert Report did take home the Emmy for Outstanding Writing, fans of the show will be tuning in this evening for sure, to see how Colbert reacts to yet another defeat.

On a related note, two other big winners at the 60th Primetime Emmy Awards were NBC’s 30 Rock, which took home 4 awards including 2 for Tina Fey. AMC’s Mad Men also made the most of their first year of Emmy eligibility, bringing in the award for Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Writing (Matthew Weiner).
