If you have any taste in movies at all then you know that James Cameron’s Aliens is a kick-ass action/sci-fi movie that never gets old. You should also know that Michael Biehn, who played Cpl. Hicks in Aliens, has a resume filled with fun and memorable flicks. The Terminator, Timebomb, The Abyss, The Seventh Sign, K2, The Rock, Tombstone, and Planet Terror are just a few of his awesomely entertaining movies. Sure he also starred in Take Me Home Tonight, but a man’s gotta put food on the table.

Well if you love the guy as much as you should then you’ll be excited to know he’s hosting a double feature at the Alamo Drafthouse on Saturday the 14th. That’s tomorrow! It’s also in Austin Texas, so if you’re not geographically located nearby you should probably stop reading now. (In fact, go ahead and read this instead.)

But not everyone is thrilled at the discovery, and soon some very peculiar and frightening beings are swarming down the mountain in search of their captured leader. Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale hits Bluray/DVD on October 25th.

The general rule of sequels is that they become less exciting and original as they continue. Each successive film copies from its predecessor and often ends up a pale copy. Wes Craven’s Scream series is no exception as parts two and three were both far lesser films than the original. Still, they each had bits that worked. Needless to say, when plans for a fourth film were announced a decade after Scream 3 very few people were excited at the prospect.

And then Scream 4 ended up being the best Scream since the original.

My full review is here, but the bottom line is that the movie is “funny, fresh, and wonderfully bloody, and it finds that delicate balance between horror and comedy that the last entry missed entirely.” Craven and screenwriter Kevin Williamson (who also wrote the original) have pulled off something special here with the help of a fantastically entertaining cast. (Second best ensemble of the year behind Horrible Bosses!) The lead trio returns, but they’re joined by several recognizable faces who help add personality, comedic timing, and sex appeal (thank you Hayden Panettiere). It’s a lot of fun, and fans of the series who passed on it in theaters should definitely give it a watch on DVD or Blu-ray.

Shaolin is a new film from director Benny Chan that stars Andy Lau as a vicious warlord whose wicked ways come to an end when he’s double-crossed and he loses his family. He finds redemption with the monks of the Shaolin Temple, but when past deeds and associates return he’s forced to defend his new home and the innocents around him.

The good news is I’ve just finished watching the movie, and it’s pretty damn fantastic.

The even better news is that Shaolin‘s distributor, Well Go USA, is offering up one hell of an awesome prize pack consisting of SIX Blu-rays and TWO posters for one lucky reader. Revenge films are a genre unto themselves and usually fit a very specific mold. They’re usually meant to be both entertaining and cathartic, but there’s rarely any serious questions asked as to the moral state of the actions playing out before us. Director Susanne Bier’s Academy Award winning film, In a Better World, sets out to do just that.

The film follows two stories… two boys deal with a schoolyard bully but their efforts get out of hand, and a doctor who’s life mission is to heal the sick and wounded finds his ideals questioned when faced with pure evil. It’s a suspenseful and engaging experience, and it offers no easy answers.

Who doesn’t love cinema from the 80s? Aside from Cole Abaius I mean. The decade is a movie genre unto itself and filled with films that could have only been made in that very specific time. More than just about any other decade films from the 80s are instantly recognizable by their attitudes, wardrobes, and degree of female nudity. Luckily for those of us you who weren’t alive in the 80s Hollywood occasionally returns to the scene of the crime and makes a film that hopes to recapture that poppy magic. Okay, so the “Beast” in the recently released Beastly isn’t actually a hairy creature which probably renders the title of this post moot. Or does it? Exactly. Now that you’re thoroughly confused and your blood is flowing back to your brain let’s get to the point. Beastly tells the tale of a douchey teenager who’s cursed by a spurned witch and transformed into an unattractively scarred and tattooed freak. The curse can be lifted within a year’s time but only if he can find that blind girl from Mask and make her love him. If she’s not available a former Disney star will do too. Can he break the curse or is he doomed to spend the rest of his life looking like the tool he was?

What comes to mind when you think of Norway? I mean aside from snowbound zombies, giant trolls, and fjords of course. Are the fjords even in Norway? Am I thinking of Finland? I digress.

What’s never come to my mind when thinking of Norway is the idea that the country saw its fair share of resistance fighters during World War II dedicated to stopping the German onslaught. Who knew? Having recently watched the newly released Max Manus: Man Of War I can proudly say that now I know. And I want to share that knowledge with you. Three of you actually…

Max Manus: Man Of War hit shelves today, and we’ve got three Blu-rays to give away! The movie is a fact-based look at one of Norway’s greatest war heroes, Max Manus. His energy and patriotic verve were immense, and his skill/luck at escaping Nazi capture made him a wanted man and a legend. The movie is fantastic and blends strong character work with intense gun battles and scenes of sabotage. I’m recommending it as a BUY in this week’s DVD column, but if you have a Blu-ray player there’s a chance you can get a copy for free. How can you win? After fighting against the Russians during the Winter War in Finland in 1939, Norwegian soldier Max Manus (Aksel Hennie) returns to a German-occupied Norway. He joins the resistance movement and becomes one of the most important members of the so-called “Oslo Gang,” soon confirming his reputation for audacity by making two daring escapes from German captivity. He eventually reunites with his best friend Gregers Gram (Nicolai Cleve Broch) in Scotland, where they receive special training as saboteurs with a pan-national resistance movement, after which they are parachuted back to their homeland. While there, Max and Gregers lead a mission to sink German supply ships in the heavily guarded Oslo harbor, a spectacular act that leads to severe retaliation from the local Gestapo leader, Siegfred Fehmer (Ken Duken).“

Those who follow me on Twitter, Miso, Friendster and Friendface might be aware of the fact that I am unabashedly in love with Vince Gilligan’s gripping, deeply fascinating series Breaking Bad. The show, which earned two Emmy Awards in 2010 for the performances of Bryan Cranston (Lead Actor in a Drama Series) and Aaron Paul (Supporting Actor in a Drama Series), is a tour-de-force of drama, tension and sometimes humor. It’s also about selling meth. But that’s only a small piece of the pie. Many a critic has called Breaking Bad “the best show on television.” I would say such things, as well.

I’m not sure anyone would say they’re a fan of 90s horror. I’m not even sure what that would mean. They were a fan of bad horror? Or Scream or maybe I Know What You Did Last Summer?
