Check It Out: Awesome New Terminator Salvation Concept Art

As you know, I’m a sucker for some cool lookin’ concept art. And some of the stuff that has come out of McG’s upcoming film Terminator Salvation has been particularly breathtaking. In addition to the awesome concept art that we posted, then removed back in November that showed off some of the new man-killing machines, we now have some very cool art — drawn by ILM artist Christian Alzmann and visual effects art director Warren Fu — which shows off some of post-apocalyptic San Francisco. There is also a shot of a cool flying thingy known as the Transporter, a shot of a human trying to break into some sort of SkyNet facility and oh yeah, one of those kick-ass Harvester things that looks like an evil Transformer. It is all very cool, as you will see below.

Awesome Transformers 2 Concept Art Hits the Web

Get ‘em while they’re hot, kids, as we’re sure they will be taken down soon enough. A big batch of concept art from the upcoming film Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen have popped up over on Flickr (via /Film) and we’re glad to be able to share them with you. As you will notice below, these new photos include first looks at characters such as The Fallen, The Twins (Skids and Mudflap), Devastator, Sideswipe and — spoiler alert – a familiar bad guy from the previous film who has a new form.

Officially Cool: Phil Saunders’ John Carter of Mars, Superman Concept Art

This may or may not be new to all of you, but as of this morning when reader Christopher M. sent it over it was new to me — so it wins the Officially Cool stamp of approval. It is a slew of additional concept drawings for John Carter of Mars by Phil Saunders, whose credits include being an illustrator on Iron Man, Spider-Man 3 and Zathura. They were posted over on Saunders’ personal blog the other day and they are certainly worth checking out.

John Carter of Mars is currently under the careful eye of WALL-E directed Andrew Stanton and is being developed by Stanton and friends over at Pixar as a half animation, half live-action adventure. It tells the story of Civil War vet John Carter, who is transplanted to Mars, where he discovers a lush, wildly diverse planet whose main inhabitants are 12-foot tall green barbarians. Finding himself a prisoner of these creatures, he escapes, only to encounter Dejah Thoris, Princess of Helium, who is in desperate need of a savior.

As an added bonus, Saunders also posted some concept art for the Brett Ratner directed, J.J. Abrams written Superman movie that never was. As Saunders explains, “This is about as un-dynamic a composition as you can come up with, but Production Designer Owen Patterson wanted a straight one-point perspective view of Superman facing off against the Rouser (a Japa… er, Kryptonian Battle Pod, don’t ask) so you could compare scale. I had fun designing the Rouser, though.”

Check It Out: Awesome Rick Baker ‘Wolfman’ Concept Art

Our good friends over at ShockTillYouDrop picked up the following concept art from from Joe Johnston’s The Wolfman that were posted over at the ZBrushCentral Forums, and it is something that we can officially mark as ‘awesome’. As many of you may know, there has been much debate over what the transformation from Benecio Del Toro to the actual Wolfman. At one point legendary make-up artist Rick Baker had publicly complained about the studio’s decision to use a computer-generated transformation instead of something practical.

It is still up in the air as to what sort of transformation will be seen in the film and as Shock points out, “The pieces below could represent Baker merely tinkering with his Zbrush program.” And we agree — either way, the images below are really frickin’ cool.

Jaw-Dropping ‘World War Z’ Concept Art Emerges

See what I did there? I used “jaw-dropping” because it looks like the lead zombie is getting his jaw blown off, and I used “emerges” because Zombies emerge from the grave. Fure isn’t the only one that can use wordplay around here.

Ugh, I’m awful at this.

Anyway, those handsome devils over at io9 have an incredible bloodbath-put-to-paper piece of concept art from artist Daniel LuVisi, a guy trying to score a job working on World War Z for director Marc Forester with his concept art entitled ‘The Battle of Yonkers’:

I would highly suggest clicking on the image, because the original is over twice that size, and the artwork is fascinatingly intricate. Beautiful. Also, zombies are involved.

I’d also suggest checking out the full io9 post, because they scored a pretty cool conversation with the artist.

Holy crap, how awesome is that?

New Transformers 2 Concept Art Shows Some Bestiality

The folks over at Transformers Live have posted some new concept art from Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. The artwork above, which cannot really be verified as legit, shows beast modes for both Ravage and Megatron. Ravage is a Decepticon that is much like Scorponok from the first film, never really changing into a robot mode. The Megatron design conflicts a bit with the previously found tank design, but it isn’t far off. If I had to guess, this concept art is close but not exactly what we’ll see in theaters next summer. Terminator Salvation: New Concept Art and Footage

It has been a bit since we have seen anything solid come out of the Terminator Salvation production, leaving us to assume that things are going well for McG and crew. But this past weekend we got two hot tips from readers Allen in Portland and Kraig in NYC. The first is a gallery of concept art that has appeared online which features some of the menacing machines that John Connor, played by Chrisitan Bale, will face in the upcoming reboot. As you will see if you click and make these high-res, the art was done by artist Victor Martinez back in May 2008. Martinez is listed as a conceptual artist on the flick, so these are very legitimate designs — a fact that leads us to believe that we probably shouldn’t have them. But alas, we thought we’d share them anyway:

Some wicked designs, indeed. And for those of you wondering, the one that looks like the old school Schwarzenegger Terminator was identified as a T-600, a downgraded model from the T-800 seen in the first three films. The other extremely cool concept is the tall Harvester, which is shown standing next to a regular sized Terminator. That thing is huge and pretty wicked if you ask me. Of course, these are all just concept drawings, so there is a chance that some of these designs may not make it into the film — but that won’t stop us from oogling them a bit.

This War Machine Concept Art Will Really Make Terrence Howard Angry

First he gets dropped from Iron Man 2 via a story in The Hollywood Reporter, then he has to go on NPR and tell his side of the story and now this. What else could go wrong for good ole’ Terrence Howard? To say the least, its hard out here for a pimp, especially when you’re tryin’ to get that salary bump for the sequel. Though, I would argue that the War Machine concept art seen above and below, which comes to our attention via Slashfilm, is enough to have me settling with a pay cut just to be caught in that getup. Also below are two other designs, one of which is a ’stealthy’ suit that was a little too modern for the film, and an underwater addition to the suit that had been requested by Avi Arad, but never used.

The art is an official design from Phil Saunders, who describes them below:

These three images I did at the very end of production as alternate suit designs that would have been in a Hall of Armor coda at the end of the film. I spent a lot of time on developing this [War Machine] suit, which was of course cut from the script about half way through pre-production. Originally it was going to be called the MK IV armor and would have been weaponized swap-out parts that would be worn over the original MK III armor. Earlier versions were red and gold, and would have been worn by Tony Stark in the final battle sequence.

He also warns fans that if there is War Machine in Iron Man 2, that these designs probably won’t look anything like it. By my estimation, they would at least have a good starting point. It certainly looks a lot better than that War Machine fan art that we showed you way back when.

The Horde: Cops, Robbers, Zombies. French.

Yes, I am the guy who just last week wondered if the world really needs any new zombie movies. But the French film The Horde has a compelling story going for it. According to our friends at Slashfilm, “the story follows four corrupt police officers who raid an abandoned tower looking for a group of gangsters who killed one of their colleagues. But when a zombie outbreak hits, the policemen must unite with the gangsters in order to survive from the hordes of oncoming undead.”

Now that’s what I’m talking about. That’s the B-movie action/horror hybrid genre at work–something that we haven’t seen done well since Robert Rodriguez directed Quentin Tarantino’s From Dusk ‘Til Dawn script. And add to that the fact that this is going to be a French movie?

Awesome.

In case you haven’t been following French film lately, these guys have been kicking our asses over the past few years when it comes to good old fashioned gore-fest horror. I don’t know what’s going on in that country, but after seeing High Tension, Inside, and other rather disturbing fare, I’m convinced they are in a period of horror renaissance. So when George Romero announces a new zombie flick, I find it hard to get all too excited. Been there, done that. But a French zombie film with a cops and robbers subplot seemingly lifted straight out of the low budget, early seventies Grindhouse cult?

I’m there. Are you?

More Iron Man Concept Art Than You Can Shake a Stick At

If there is one movie that we all loved this past summer, it was The Dark Knight. But if there was a second movie that I believe we all loved, it was Iron Man. Director Jon Favreau showed off his vision of one of the most exciting and badass comic book characters in history by delivering a fast-paced, intense action experience that had fans’ heart rates going through the roof. And while we all scramble to watch Iron Man over and over on DVD and Blu-ray, it doesn’t hurt to take a look back to the production period — to the concept art. If you thought Iron Man was cool on the big screen, wait until you see where he came from. Have a look at our gigantic gallery of concept art below.

More Photos, 10-Second Clip from Gatchaman

Back in early August, we gave you a quick look at some concept art from the upcoming iMAGi Entertainment film Gatchaman, which is based on a Japanese television show that made its way to the U.S. in the 70s under the name “G-Force.” At that time, all we had were a few cool concept photos and the knowledge that iMAGi’s animators have some serious game, seeing as they were the ones who delivered the most recent TMNT film. Today, we’ve gotten word of more concept art from the film, which appears to be just as breathtaking as the art we saw a month ago. As well, we have also received a brand new ten second clip from the trailer — or more specifically, the last ten seconds of the trailer. Have a look for yourself below, beginning with the images.

Must-See: Brian Murray’s Wicked Green Lantern Concept Art

One movie that many a comic book fan is looking forward to is a big screen adaptation of Green Lantern. Much like Iron Man, the Green Lantern has been under the radar of mainstream audiences, but has an amazing fan following. And under the right circumstances, he too can rise out of cinematic ashes and become another great comic book movie franchise. The Green Lantern movie, which is being targeted for a 2010 release, is currently on the books with “Everwood” and “Eli Stone” creator Greg Berlanti attached to write and direct.

And in order to get the job, Berlanti had to give one hell of a pitch to Warner Bros., as his resume doesn’t exactly scream big budget comic book movie. As part of that pitch, Berlanti enlisted the help of illustrator Brian Murray, who drew up a sampling of concept art that helped Berlanti secure the project. Earlier today, Murray posted some of the concept art to his website, MurrayStudios.com. We’ve got a sampling for your viewing pleasure below.

The Princess and the Frog: Controversy or Innocence?

This Christmas, Disney returns to its beloved 2D animation with a little fairy-tale entitled, The Princess and the Frog. A lot of buzz has been surrounding the main character’s ethnicity, because for the first time, this Disney princess… is black.

Princess Tiana (voiced by Ankia Noni Rose) lives in the French Quarter in beautiful New Orleans, Louisiana. While the plot is still vague at this point, the story has gotten several disapproving comments. As Charlotte Observer columnist William Blackburn explains:

“This princess’ story is set in New Orleans, the setting of one of the most devastating tragedies to beset a black community. And then they throw in the voodoo theme [the fairy-godmother character is a voodoo priestess] and an alligator sidekick. When you put New Orleans, alligators and voodoo together, there’s no beauty there.”

Controversy surrounding the movie include issues with the original title (The Frog Princess-insinuating black women are ugly perhaps?), the Princess’ original name (Maddy-not ‘ethnic’ enough perhaps?), as well as the setting of New Orleans-a region where the lives of many black families (and white families) were devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Additional complaints include: the use of voodoo magic and an alligator sidekick, making the film seem somewhat (if unintentionally) racist and pointed.

But let’s be honest here. It’s an animated movie, people. It is not a social cry or a political statement. It’s about a princess and her talking animal friends. Sounds like every other movie Disney has ever spit out. Still thinking The Princess and the Frog is racial? Well, consider the following racial assumptions made in other Disney animated features over the years:

In Aladdin, Princess Jasmine has an Anglocized name that doesn’t originate from Saudi Arabia.
In Mulan, the title character has a pet dragon, which could be offensive to the Chinese people.
Magic or the occult is used in several (almost all) films including: The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, The Sword and the Stone, Cinderella, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty…So why is voodoo considered a taboo for The Frog Princess? If it’s a complaint about religious practices, it might be valid.

Regardless of social issues with the film, it’s nice to see Disney go back to basics on their latest endeavor. Best yet: this marks the first Disney musical since Hercules! I can’t wait to see inanimate objects and animals singing about love and magic. For some beautifully drawn artwork from the film, check out these stills:

New Halo Concept Art Revealed; No Movie Yet, Though

Ok, I’m going to admit that I was one of the fans that was totally hyped about a potential Halo movie. I am a huge fan of the games (even though I’m not that good), and I thought that the story behind the game had great potential to become a movie. I thought that where other video game movies failed (thanks Uwe Boll), Halo would succeed. One of the most successful game franchises ever with a rabid fan base can’t possibly go wrong, could it?

Apparently, this is not what Hollywood thought. As far as we all know, the project is dead. No takers. Not gonna happen… right?

Well, it has been discovered that Stuart Beattie has penned a script based on one of the most successful Halo books, Halo: Fall of Reach. In a nutshell, the novel by Eric Nylund is a prequel to Halo: Combat Evolved. It explains the story behind the creation of the SPARTAN II soldiers, and Master Chief, the protagonist of the Halo games. The script is real, and concept art has been created for several scenes from the script. Not just any concept art either. It’s Uber cool concept art created by Kasra Farahani, who was responsible for concept art for such films as Hancock and Spiderman 3.

With Farahani as your concept artist, you know the movie’s gonna be cool. How cool? I don’t know. The art, however, is being used as part of presentations, perhaps to Microsoft about backing the movie. There are plenty of stars in Hollywood who are fans of the game that would love to see this movie made.

Of course, there is no definite answer as to whether or not the Halo movie is going to be made. For all we know, it could just be another thing for fanboys to drool over while they dream of the movie. I will be one of them!

This Transformer Would Have Cost a Billion Dollars a Minute

It is quite possible that you have already seen the image above, which was released by conceptual artist Tim Flattery on his personal website last week, but it is worth us mentioning anyway. Why? Because we are huge Transformers fans, that’s why.

As well, we here at Film School Rejects feel that it is important to always look back at what could have been, leaving us free to second-guess every single film that comes out… Alright, that isn’t true — we just think this image is really damn cool. And as much as we wished that Michael Bay would have included the Transformer above, which appears to be some sort of aircraft carrier. I don’t care what its name is, or whether it is a good guy or a bad guy — it’s badass. To see it and 14 other great concepts that didn’t quite make it into the 2007 blockbuster, head over to Tim Flattery’s website.
