Whether you actually want to see Human Centipede or its sloppy sequel Human Centipede II (Full Sequence), which hits DVD and Blu-ray this week, you’re definitely aware of the movies. If you didn’t think that the first Human Centipede was gory enough, you now can enjoy the unrated, uncut version of the second film in the privacy (and safety) of your own home. It’s a gross-out film, to be sure, so we don’t recommend eating a pizza or a chocolate sundae while watching it. But that shouldn’t stop you from enjoying a few adult beverages along the way. And if you’re so shocked, you’re wondering when you should drink, here’s our suggestions.

Sometimes, choosing the right movie for the weekly DVD drinking game is a tough decision. Other times, it comes as naturally as breathing. This week, we breathe in the Christmas goodness of the latest Harold & Kumar movie and enjoy its raunchy silliness. Yeah, we know Christmas was a couple months ago, but who says you need to have tinsel on your tree to watch this movie? These guys may not be known for following the rules, but here’s a slate of rules you’ll enjoy following while you watch the film. Just don’t try anything too strong, or you might end up like Thomas Lennon’s on-screen child. And no one wants that, do they?

With the weekend here and most DVD and Blu-rays hitting the shelves on Tuesday, you might have already checked out our weekly drinking game for The Thing. If you want another chance – or another excuse – to drink a little this weekend, try out this bonus drinking game based on the killer thriller Texas Killing Fields. If you liked the teaming up of current “It” stars Jessica Chastain and Sam Worthington, both of whom have been in about six dozen movies in the last couple years, you could watch this film…or The Debt. But if you watch The Debt, this drinking game won’t work very well.

The rumored-about, questioned and criticized prequel to John Carpenter’s classic 1982 horror flick The Thing has come and gone. Now, it’s coming again, this week to DVD and Blu-ray. The flick tells the story behind the Norwegian outpost in Antarctica, chronicling the first people to dig the Thing out of the ice. Fans of the Carpenter classic will complain about the overuse of CGI and the pointlessness of the new film, but they may also find some likeable moments if they look hard enough. If not, they can always play this game and knock back a few glasses of Ringnes beer or whatever else they drink in Norway.

When a boxing robot movie was first rumored about, a lot of people rolled their eyes and shook their heads. It’s bad enough that we’ve got adaptations of the board games Monopoly and Battleship coming down the pike, but a Rock’em Sock’em Robots movie just seemed ridiculous. The result was Real Steel, which is a pretty cool flick, believe it or not. It’s not going to win any awards (except maybe Best Visual Effects, thanks to an Oscar nomination this week), but it’s still an entertaining action film about a father and son and a robot beating the bolts out of other robots. And like any good sporting event, it is more fun to drink while watching it.

I dare you! I dare you to make it through the worst reviewed film on Rotten Tomatoes in 2011 (currently rocking a 0% with 35 reviews). I dare you to suffer from titles to credits the movie which brought in only an average of 212 people per screen during its entire nationwide two-week run. I dare you to face the horror of the movie that wasn’t screened for critics, even though the same studio still screened Jack and Jill later in the year. The only way to actually make it through the first ten minutes of Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star, let alone the entire film, is to have a beer or glass of wine in hand, and plenty of it in reserve. One can only speculate that the people making the film had plenty of alcohol on the set, or they would have noticed the travesty they were making

One big action release on DVD and Blu-ray this week features Jason Statham, Robert De Niro, Clive Owen and Clive Owen’s mustache. The film Killer Elite is based on a true story about a secret agency that arranged assassinations in the early 80s. It also features a lot of 80s porno-era facial hair, which should be a treat for everyone. While the film misses the chance to have Jason Statham and Clive Owen have a street race to see whether the Transporter or BMW’s The Driver is better behind the wheel, but at least it gives “tough guy” movie fans a chance to see some icons together on the same screen. For everyone else, it offers a great chance to participate in a drinking game.

January doesn’t just mean it’s time for colder days and snowfall that makes traffic a mess. January also means that cold and flu season is fully upon us. And what better movie to watch during cold and flu season than Steven Soderbergh’s thriller about a killer virus that threatens to wipe out a significant portion of the world’s population. Watching Contagion on Blu-ray or DVD gives you a sense of security because you won’t be terrified every time someone in the movie theater coughs. And that sense of security can be helped by knocking back a few beers or glasses of wine while watching the movie. Just get your flu shot first.

As the current year comes to a close, many people focus on the symbolic birth of the upcoming new year. But horror movie fans might be more inclined to focus on the death of the old one. In particular, as 2011 winds down to its final destination, here’s your chance to raise a glass of champagne (or beer or wine) while revisiting this summer’s Final Destination 5 on DVD and Blu-ray. Forget in-depth characters and brilliant acting. Final Destination 5 delivers on some creative kills and one hell of a disaster sequence in the beginning. If you like the series, there are some good things in there to toast…much more than the last film, at least.

Sure, there’s a lot of new DVD and Blu-ray releases this week to get as last-minute stocking stuffers. But none of these really scream “Christmas” unless you’re a huge Woody Allen fan or someone who watches way too much mixed martial arts. (Which, of course, begs the question as to when Woody’s gonna make his neurotic MMA comedy?) So to get into the Christmas spirit in the last couple days before the fat guy in the red suit comes barreling down your chimney, let’s look at a classic. If you recorded A Charlie Brown Christmas a few weeks back, or if you have the copy of the DVD or Blu-ray, here’s a chance to toast that bald kid whom nobody likes.

If you liked Joe Johnston’s superhero action flick Captain America: The First Avenger this summer, you might want to watch some of his older movies. No, I’m not talking about The Wolfman. I’m talking about his other comic book film from 1991: The Rocketeer. In honor of its 20th anniversary, Disney has released the film for the first time on Blu-ray. Fans of The Rocketeer will recognize the fact that the rocket pack is powered by alcohol. What a coincidence… so is this column. Take a few drinks from your own rocket pack and enjoy this classic adventure in high definition.

Just in time for the gift-giving season, the studios have dropped a large number of big name DVDs and Blu-rays on the marketplace. Many of these are the would-be blockbusters from this past summer, including the Jon Favreau sci-fi Western Cowboys & Aliens. It may not have been the biggest hit, but now you can check it out in the comfort of your own home, watching either the theatrical version or the extended one. So pull up a bar stool, as if you’re in your favorite saloon, and knock back a few drinks with James Bond and Indiana Jones in the old West. Though we’d suggest a cup of suds over the harder drinks, or you might not make it through the movie.

One of the biggest hits of 2011 was The Hangover: Part II, raking in tons of money this summer and giving fans a chance to watch the same shenanigans from the first movie played out again. With recent news that The Hangover: Part III will start shooting next year, this trend doesn’t look like it will stop. Whether you liked the first movie, the second movie or both – or if you hated them – this choice for a drinking game is a no-brainer. Toast the Wolf Pack and get started on your own hangover.

It’s the week after Thanksgiving, there’s Christmas music playing non-stop on the radio and people are getting pepper-sprayed at Wal-Mart during Black Friday video game stampedes. This can only mean one thing… it’s time for a kick-ass hillbilly horror comedy to come out on DVD and Blu-ray. Tucker & Dale vs. Evil had a fun little jaunt through limited release this fall, along with some premium-priced On Demand options. Now, everybody’s favorite West Virginia rednecks can come to your DVD or Blu-ray player and fight the evil that is college kids camping in the woods. And like our heroes Tucker and Dale, it’s best enjoyed with a can of Pabst Blue Ribbon (in a non-ironic way), or better yet: simple generic beer!

This week, modern TV stars meet with nostalgic puppets in the new film The Muppets. And while we don’t condone sneaking booze into a theater filled with families and kids, there’s always the option to watch some of the original Muppet content on DVD, VHS, Netflix Instant and various other On Demand platforms. This game works for any of the Muppet movies, though we suggest starting with The Muppet Movie from 1979 before checking out the later films (like The Muppet Wizard of Oz). In theory, it’s also compatible with The Muppet Show, though Dr. Bunsen Honeydew is currently conducting experiments with Beaker to be sure. Poor Beaker.

It’s been 50 years since West Side Story made the big plié to the silver screen, destined to win ten Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Now, it’s getting its first ever Blu-ray release to commemorate its 50th anniversary. Yeah, it’s not the most realistic look at New York street gangs. Gang members are not that clean cut, and they do tend to carry more dangerous weapons than wrenches and belts. But this is a slice of American cinematic history. So pick a side – Jets or Sharks – and spend some time with one of the most famous musicals Hollywood ever made.

When the big-screen adaptation of Ayn Rand’s best-selling novel Atlas Shrugged came out on the not-so-subtle date of April 15th earlier this year, the Tea Party thought it was going to be a huge success. Spoiler: It wasn’t. If you want further details on why, you might want to check out Cole Abaius’s in-depth review of the movie here. Now that Atlas Shrugged: Part I is out on DVD and Blu-ray and 3D Blu-ray, you can rent it and have your own tea party, but with beer. A beer party. At the suggestion of Mr. Abaius, we present this not-so-complex drinking game to help you get through the first (and possibly only) part of the filmed saga.

This past summer, Disney/Pixar continued their string of sequels with Cars 2. It may not have been the most popular Pixar film with critics, but kids loved it, and it’s one of the most merchandised movie of the year. That’s gotta be worth something, right? Now that Cars 2 is out on DVD, Blu-ray and 3D Blu-ray, parents around the world will be watching it over and over and over again with their kids. Whether you liked the film or not, this might begin to wear on you. So uncork a bottle of wine or crack open a beer and find a new way to get through the film for the 50th time.

Almost two decades after the first film was released in theaters, Jurassic Park is getting a new Blu-ray release, packaged with its two sequels. The original film helped revolutionize the use of CGI effects (for better or for worse), and it still holds up today. Forget about that awful wig on Laura Dern’s stunt double or the shifting geography of the park, these films are still fun to watch. Tap into the dinosaur-loving kid in all of us, and tap into a fresh case of beer. Or choose some wine that’s been fermenting for the last 65 million years. All three films will take the entire day to watch, and by the end, you should be seeing dinosaurs if you play the game right.

Just because it was raked over the critical coals this past summer doesn’t mean that Green Lantern can’t be fun. And even though St. Patrick’s Day is five months away, this would be a perfect time to get your hands on some green beer and watch the film again on DVD or Blu-ray (or if you’re really ambitious, on 3D Blu-ray). Remember that a Green Lantern’s might comes from the power of will. Here is your chance to test the strength of your will and intestinal fortitude. Who knows? By the end of the movie, you might just believe that you can create things with your mind.
