Billy Bob ThorntonFile this one squarely under the rumor heading for now as there’s nothing to back it up aside from one offhand comment sandwiched between vulvas and vibrators on a late night radio sex show. Aside from the opportunity to type ‘vulvas and vibrators’ (twice!) this rumor is just interesting enough to report even without much in the way of substance…

JoBlo.com is reporting that Robert Englund, beloved star of V, V: The Final Battle, and the recent Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer, appeared recently on Loveline and received a question about the upcoming re-imagining of his most famous film, A Nightmare on Elm Street. Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes shingle is prepping the remake, and Englund said the latest news he was privy to had Oscar-winner Billy Bob Thornton on the short list for the role of Freddy Krueger.

This rumor is highly doubtful for several reasons, not the least of which is Platinum Dunes penchant for casting from the shallow end of the acting pool. Thornton is an Oscar winner who continues to get starring roles in feature films as opposed to the second rate TV stars and has-beens usually found in Bay’s franchise reboots. On the plus side, Thornton has worked with Bay before on Armageddon (although at the rate Thornton churns out his “comedies” he’s pretty much worked with everyone by now.)
