Reject Update: Beowulf Wins at Box Office

Well, it’s rare for me to get one right these days, but Beowulf was the winner at the box office this weekend. I called it at around $28 million, and that’s exactly what the take was this weekend for this flick. But as usual, I blew the rest of the predictions. So what else is news.

I thought Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium would get at least second place, and it didn’t even do that! It crashed to fifth instead, behind Bee Movie and American Gangster. Even Fred Claus finished ahead of it. $10 million for Mr. Magorium is a complete embarrassment.

Why did this piece of junk do so poorly? Probably because it was exactly that, a piece of junk. I really ought to give the kids of the USA more credit when it comes to picking movies. Let’s face it, if I were a kid I wouldn’t go watch Mr. Magorium either. But I might watch Bee Movie.

Also, there was a surprise in seventh spot as No Country for Old Men did just over $3 million in business in just its second week at theaters. But it was only in 148 theaters! I find it really unusual for a movie to hit the Top Ten with a theater count so low. But it doesn’t take much money to make the Weekend Top Ten these days.

This coming week, of course, is Thanksgiving Week in the USA and that means a whole bunch of movies coming out on Wednesday. So I plan to be back a little earlier than usual with a preview of the box office for these latest movies coming out in mid-week.
