@Dos
The article is talking about theatrical releases. Lots of horror films come to DVD in a month, but most are crap. "Pieces" and "The Beyond" are actually two worth checking out, but they're still not new big screen releases, rather just old movies finally getting a decent DVD release.

I'm disappointed with the lack of horror coming out in Oct! Halloween is my favorite holiday and since the theaters offer nothing my brother and I pick one night in Oct to have a few friends over and watch a couple of horror movies. I was hoping Trick 'r Treat would finally make an appearance because it looks pretty good, but at this point it's probably lost to the vaults and doomed to an eventual straight to DVD release. Heck, I'd be happy with that at this point.

This may be stating the obvious, but the horror genre seems to go through cycles. In the early 70's, The Exorcist and The Omen came out, and a string of stupid copies and sequels filled the box office until Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, and Friday the 13th came out. Terrible clones followed. Then Scream came out and blew the doors off of Hollywood by following the self tongue in cheek indie formula, and that was followed by a slew of terrible copies that totally missed the point. Early 2000's: The Ring followed by 42,000 Japanese/Korean horror remakes starring a minimum of one dark haired creepy girl. Then torture porn came along (which I can't get into; they take the female-demeaning nature of horror to an unnecessary level and kind of makes me feel like a serial rapist for watching). Combine all of this with remakes of classic horror films from the 70's and 80's and you have the sorry state that horror is in right now. Let's just hope that we get some innovators in there to get Me interested in horror again. Because in my opinion, Saw 1 - 12 isn't cutting the mustard, its cutting the cheese.

@Micah
Agreed. No matter how bad it is, you release a horror movie called "Trick 'r Treat" around Halloween and you get a 20+million opening. And if its actually good, you might make 50.

This is EXACTLY why Warner Brothers never should have dropped Trick 'r Treat. Now all we have this Halloween is a sequel, a remake, a re-issue and a gimmicky PG-13 one.
