First of all, let me get this out of the way, Silver Surfer is definitely an upgrade over the original Fantastic Four movie. The first FF, while attempting to show the origin of the group, failed in just about every arena it ventured. While Silver Surfer does flesh out the story and the characters a little more, it's still never going to be confused with Citizen Kane. Hell, it's probably closer to Batman & Robin than Batman Begins. Where is does succeed, is that it has some pretty good comic dialogue and timing. Now, a comic book movie really shouldn't try to be funny, it should use comedy to drive the action; but Silver Surfer really does use the quips in it's script to move from dry spot to dry spot. The other real problem, is that the story is super condensed, it could have easily ballooned to, I don't know, 2 hrs, I mean come on 1 hr and 40 minutes, we're talking Disney animated feature here, geesh!

First of all, let me get this out of the way, Silver Surfer is definitely an upgrade over the original Fantastic Four movie. The first FF, while attempting to show the origin of the group, failed in just about every arena it ventured. While Silver Surfer does flesh out the story and the characters a little more, it’s still never going to be confused with Citizen Kane. Hell, it’s probably closer to Batman & Robin than Batman Begins.

Where this movie does succeed, however, is in that it has some pretty good comic dialogue and timing. Now, a comic book movie really shouldn’t try to be funny, it should use comedy to drive the action; but Silver Surfer really does use the quips in its script to move from dry spot to dry spot. The other real problem, is that the story is super condensed, it could have easily ballooned to, I don’t know, two hours, I mean come on 1 hr and 40 minutes, we’re talking Disney animated feature here, geesh!

As far as characters go, I really think the movie could have survived without the introduction of Andre Braugher’s Army General, mainly because the back story between him and Mr. Fantastic is never completely sorted out. Yes, they mention it, but if you’re going to introduce a character who has a history with another character, tell the damn story. Jessica Alba plays Sue Storm, the betrothed of Mr. Fantastic, turns into hyper-emotional, I never live a great life, unless I get married and have kids, Super Hero, huh, whatever. The person that gets the brunt of carrying this movie, is Chris Evans, who really rises to the challenge, he is beset with angst over being the flamboyant face of the FF, and nearly getting innocent people and his team members killed. He finds his true inner hero, and works within the team structure as well as getting a new found respect for Ben Grimm’s dilemma. He looks inside and finds the depth to shoulder the responsibility it takes to be a true comic book hero, in the penultimate scene, faces Dr. Doom alone, and scores. The other great part in this movie is the Silver Surfer, the enslaved emissary of the world eater, Galactus. He is embodied by the master of the prosthetic, Doug Jones, and voiced by silky smooth, Lawrence Fishburne. The combination of the two is really what sets this movie apart from the mediocre comic book movie.

Finally, remember this, Silver Surfer is a comic book movie and as such, you will need to suspend belief before walking into the movie theater. You may not walk out thinking that it will be best friends with the little golden man, but as most fanboys will agree, it will serve its purpose, in showing The Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer for what it is, a movie made from a comic book, so to understand and enjoy, find your inner fanboy.
