Though this film had me at “achingly romantic,” I cringe at the thought of someone rolling their eyes and overlooking this remarkable film at the fault of the advertisers who betrayed this film’s distinct uniqueness.

A limited release, I heard about Atonement via a radio advertisement on my way to work. The commercial was a montage of hyper-romanticized lines from the film, a voice over done by a deep voiced voice actor (say that 5 times fast) who quoted gushing film critics (“the most achingly romantic movie since Titanic”), and with heart-wrenching, “just let me sob in peace” music playing in the background. Though this film had me at “achingly romantic,” I cringe at the thought of someone rolling their eyes and overlooking this remarkable film at the fault of the advertisers who betrayed this film’s distinct uniqueness. It isn’t all achingly romantic.

Keira Knightley and The Last King of Scotland’s James McAvoy star is the intense, regret-filled film, Atonement, a film that focuses on how one mistake can drastically affect the lives of many. Already at thirteen, Briony Tallis is a writer. She possesses a broad vocabulary and has a preference for the fanciful. Cecillia Tallis, Briony’s older sister (Knightley) and Robbie Turner (McAvoy), the educated and intelligent gardener’s son, are in love, but when an unfortunate incident occurs, Briony accuses Robbie of a crime he did not commit, which forces Cecillia and Robbie apart.

Cinematographically beautiful, Atonement takes this simple story and gives it an editing edge. Many scenes are unconventionally placed on a semi-linear track. Some scenes are shown again from a different person’s perspective rather than editing the scenes together, as 99.9% of movies do, or at a later moment in the film, a sequence will repeat for emphasis. Other scenes are rewound while the scene showing the chaos in Dunkirk continues for 5 minutes without any cuts. The cinematography and editing is interesting and distinct. The mise en scenes of one shot literally made me say “Wow” out loud in the theater (the scene with the family standing on the front steps). The music is amazing, and the type-writer music creates an intense and suspenseful atmosphere during the first half of the film.

The unfortunate bit is the story wasn’t fantastic. I didn’t understand why Cecillia had an initial disregard for Robbie or Briony’s reason for her terrible accusation. Some parts of the movie were romantic enough but not in the melodramatic way that it’s portrayed on commercials. Reality, in the film, is very fuzzy. Sometimes I didn’t know if the scene in front of me was a memory, a fantasy, or the current moment. I still haven’t decided if this is something I liked.

Atonement’s sophistication is what makes it out of the ordinary, and it definitely makes it Oscar bait. Hopefully this film won’t be over-looked. Citizen Kane doesn’t have a good story, and look where it is on AFI!

Grade: B+

The Upside: A good film for aspiring cinematographers.

The Downside: The story wasn’t good enough.

On the Side: Keira, please eat something, anything.

Based on the 1954 science fiction novel by Richard Matheson, Robert Neville (Will Smith) is the last man living in New York City...

One of the most awful scenarios I could ever picture myself in, other than being trapped in an automobile that is quickly being submerged by water, is being the last person alive in an abandoned, urban ghost town during the day and then at night, having to hide myself from intelligent predators who will surely find me. I would never feel safe.

Will Smith explores one of my greatest fears in his new motion picture blockbuster I Am Legend. Based on the 1954 science fiction novel by Richard Matheson, Robert Neville (Will Smith) is the last man living in New York City. In 2008, the measles was re-engineered into the Krippen Virus to work as a cure for cancer; however, it quickly mutated killing 90% of the people on the planet. 1% of the population was completely immune, but the rest became the Infected, people who exhibit primal, vampire-like qualities (sensitivity to UV light; attraction to blood)and blind rage. It was the Infected who killed the rest of the population, leaving Robert Neville, a military virologist, a lone survivor. Haunted by the memory of his family, Robert Neville obsessively searches for the cure; desperately hoping that his family’s death won’t be in vain.

This movie had so much potential. It set the perfect back story. It possessed perfect plot inertial. It perfectly developed the characters. It startled you in just the right places, and utilized silence in a strong way. Will Smith’s performance was excellent, especially considering his lack of costars. His fondness for his dog is precious and simultaneously heart-breaking, and his comedic talent helps alleviate the stark loneliness and semi-realistic terror. The CG made everything feel real (it must have cost a fortune to edit out all the people in New York City). Everything felt legitimate, and it was kind of disturbing. But when the curtain for the last act went up, the perfectly orchestrated film crumbled.

I can pinpoint it to one moment; the introduction of the Ana and Ethan. They were presented very late into the film, creating no time for the audience to bond with them or trust them, and the whole fate/God bit was really out of place. It was inappropriate for these new characters to play such a large part in the ending, especially without any foreshadowing of their existence. Their role in the anti-climatic climax was weird — did Ethan even have a speaking part? I can’t remember… They had such a huge plot responsibility but they were such flat and unimportant characters. They were unsuitable for the entire film, and I blame the film’s downfall on their lack of character.

This movie could have been so good, and although I Am Legend and Will Smith may become box office legends, they unfortunately won’t make it to AFI’s top 100.

Grade: B

The Upside: The first hour of the film.

The Downside: The last 20 minutes of the film.

On the Side: Hearing Will Smith call his dog by its full name almost made me die.

Realness is easy to take for granted. One thinks it's just common sense, but what really makes something "real."

Realness is easy to take for granted. One thinks it’s just common sense, but what really makes something “real.” Does it have to be tangible? Do you have to see it to believe it; to believe in it? The thing I love the most in this whole wide world is my Cabbage Patch Kid doll, Fifi. I don’t talk about her much, but she’s quietly sat on my bed for my entire life. I love her like I love nothing else. She’s the first thing I reach for when I have a bad day, and the last thing I kiss before I got so sleep. I don’t know what compels my fondness for her, and I don’t expect anyone to understand. She may not have “life,” but she’s in my life. So even though she’s not real to you, it doesn’t matter. She’s real to me, and that is what makes something real.

Lars And The Real Girl creatively explores this same concept of love for an inanimate object. A grown man, Lars is an obliviously awkward recluse, yet he is sweet, thoughtful, and kind. He diligently goes to work each morning, and devotedly attends service every Sunday. He is refreshingly naive but has the depth of a thousand year old man. Completely incapable of handling the most simple human interaction, Lars orders an anatomically correct, life-size doll, Bianca; not for sex, but for companionship (both are waiting for marriage). All of sudden, Lars is a new person. He attends parties, makes new friends, and he’s the happiest he’s ever been. This is what every healthy relationship should do to a person . . . except his girlfriend’s a doll.

“How is this movie even watchable?” you ask. Well, obviously Lars is delusional, but that’s about all that’s wrong with his character. And its heartwarming to see a town that loves Lars so much that its people go out of its way to humor him. Through the duration of the film, Bianca is never shown in the nude, and she is never cast aside like a “thing” that was born from a box. She’s treated with respect and decency; just like a person. Because of Lars’ love for Bianca, and the town’s love for Lars, the rigid, silicone Bianca is full of life and personality. The dry, situational humor makes the pathos of this film bearable, and Ryan Gosling’s exceptional acting compels empathy from an audience that may balk at the idea of making room in its heart for loony Lars and his doll.

This movie sends an interesting message about the things we need to do to work out our feelings, and it has so much optimism about people and their ability to embrace and understand the differences in others. This is a good movie. Don’t judge it before you see it.

The Upside: Explores a serious subject through comical means.

The Downside: Nothing really . . . It’s pretty damn good.

On the Side: Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams broke up. Bummer. I wonder if it was because of Bianca?

The “American Idol” contestant is set to play Carrie Bradshaw’s assistant in this fan-ticipated flick.

The film brings us back to the Big Apple, where Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda, and Samantha are still living it up; four years after we left them in the final episode that aired in 2004. Are they happy? Will they still be with the same man? Is Samantha’s vagina still intact?

According to Variety, all four original city girls, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon, and Sarah Jessica Parker are on board for the film, which is being directed by ‘Sex’ producer Michael Patrick King.

Jennifer Hudson first caught media attention on “American Idol” in 2004 and then gained superstar status following her acclaimed performance on the movie musical Dreamgirls.

Filming will begin next week and the movie will knock up the silver screen in 2008.

There are rumors of remakes and sequels floating around about all sorts of 80’s hits including The Goonies Animated and Ferris Bueller: Another Day Off; some even with merit, like Indiana Jones 4. The next victim is the 1987 teen vamp classic, The Lost Boys. Granted, the 80’s is arguable the best decade for teen and family flicks, so I can’t blame Hollywood for trying to recreate some of that magic. Yet I draw the line when sequels go straight to DVD. Even the producers know that the film will be terrible, and unfortunately this is what we have the pleasure of expecting for Lost Boys 2: The Tribe, straight to DVD, B-movie quality.

The rumor mill has been flooded with talk that both Corey’s (Haim and Feldman) will return for this next chapter in The Lost Boys story; however, Moviehole.net has confirmed that only Corey Feldman of The Goonies and Stand By Me will be back for more. Feldman will be joined by his on-screen Frog brother, Jamison Newlander, and new characters Chris Emerson and his sister Nicole played by Tad Hilgenbrink (American Pie Presents: Band Camp) and Autumn Reeser (“The O.C.”). Hans Rodionoff penned the script and P.J. Pesce is set to direct.

Chris and his sister Nicole move to Luna Bay California following the death of their parents. Nicole unknowingly develops a relationship with a vampire, and Chris, with the help of the Frog brothers, must defeat the head vampire before Nicole transforms into a vamp herself. Gee, why does this sound so familiar?

Corey Feldman states, “I am truly excited to be on board for this sequel. After reading the latest script I genuinely believe we can deliver a sequel the fans can sink their teeth into.” Feldman’s judgment has to be severely compromised. How can I take any reality TV whore seriously? I don’t think it’s possible, but regardless of what I think, Warner Home Entertainment will still distribute Lost Boys 2: The Tribe, and I must regrettably admit that I will probably have to see it out of shear curiosity, even without the second Corey.

Helena Bonham Carter is back as evil bad-ass Bellatrix in the sixth installment of the Harry Potter cash-cow series, ropeofsilicon.com reports. She is the first in the cast to confirm a return outside of the heroic trio; Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint.

Not uncomfortable portraying off-kilter characters, Bonham Carter has played support group addict Marla Singer in Fight Club as well as provide the voice and mannerisms for Tim Burton’s character, the Corpse Bride. Her interpretation of the wild, schizo Bellatrix, makes her my first choice actress for any mentally deranged, raving lunatic role.

Bellatrix Lestrange is the Death Eater cousin of Sirius Black and is best remembered for torturing Neville Longbottom’s parents to insanity.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince will begin filming mid-Fall and has a scheduled release date for November 21, 2008.

If he signs, Affleck will join Drew Barrymore, Kevin Connolly, Bradley Cooper, Scarlett Johansson, and Justin Long in the cast. Oh, and we can’t forget the three Jenns; Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Connelly, and Ginnifer Goodwin. Ben just can’t get away from those Jennifers (i.e. Jennifer Lopez and Jennifer Garner). I can’t blame him. It is the most beautiful name in the world. I would know.

According to Variety, shooting will begin September 10 in Los Angeles. Ken Kwapis (License To Wed) will direct, and producing will be done under Drew Barrymore and Nancy Juvonen’s Flower Films banner.

“He’s Just Not That Into You” centers around the miscommunication and misunderstanding that often occurs between members of the opposite sex.

On the Side: Ben Affleck is popularly known as the former half of “Bennifer.”

The greatest time period in cinematic history has to be the 80’s. Before you gag, let me just remind of you some of the classic 80’s movies that defined pop culture. The Breakfast Club, E.T., Die Hard, and of course, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off . . . and there’s talk of a sequel. Now, you’re allowed to gag. I don’t know how I feel about this. I am simultaneously appalled and guiltily excited about the possibility.

Unknown Arizona based-film writer, Rick Rapier, wrote the script for Ferris Bueller 2: Another Day Off, and he hopes to get John Hughes to direct, but at this point in time, Hughes has nothing to do with the sequel, making me more apprehensive of this possible, straight-to-DVD film. John Hughes, wrote the original script for Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, and was also the 80’s mastermind behind classics such as Pretty In Pink, Some Kind of Wonderful, and Sixteen Candles.

Word on the street (aka the Internet buzz) says that the sequel supposedly begins on the eve of Ferris’ 40th birthday. Ferris now has a very accomplished self-help career, and his best friend Cameron is his business manager. When Ferris decides he wants to take the day off, Cameron and his business associates basically freak out, and it becomes a day full of fun and adventure. All of the original characters have been written in, including Sloan, Ferris’ high school girlfriend, Ferris’ sister, Jeannie, the principal who is no longer a principal, Rooney, and even the guy from the police station originally played by Charlie Sheen.

Now the chance of all characters to return and reprise their roles and have John Hughes direct looks unlikely from this vantage point, but it would be like a dream come true, for me and for Rapier. However, I can’t help but wonder why they just can’t leave the classics alone. The Ferris Bueller charm relies on the idea of the single, anything-is-possible kind of day. It doesn’t matter what happened before or after it. It’s all about carpe diem, and if we’re given a sequel, a look into the lives of these beloved characters in the present, we’ll fill in the gaps between that one, faithful day back in the 80’s, and inevitably taint its memory.

As of now, Ferris Bueller 2: Another Day Off has not been given the greenlight for production.

According to a United Artist producer’s spokesman, the accident occurred when a side panel of the vehicle, which was made of wooden slates, burst open during a harsh turn near Potsdamer Platz in Berlin, causing the extras to fall out. The vehicle was not traveling more than 10 miles per hour.

All eleven were taken to the hospital and treated for minor injury, however, one was forced to stay overnight. An investigation is underway to verify that this incident was not due to negligence, and the vehicle is being examined for defects.

Yahoo News reports that the spokesman did not know if this would affect the film scheduling, while Variety states that this misadventure would not affect the film scheduling.

Valkyrie stars Tom Cruise, who was not at the scene of the accident, as Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, the brain behind the failed attempt to assassinate Adolf Hitler. The film is set to open in August of next year.

In observance of recently declared National Nanny Week, which begins Friday, August 17, stores such as Victoria’s Secret, Blockbuster, and Baskin Robbins will offer discounts and coupons for their services and products according to a press release distributed by The Weinstein Company. A fantastic marketing scheme, this week also just happens to be observed one week prior to the opening of the film The Nanny Diaries. So I ask you this: which came first, the nanny week or The Nanny Diaries? My bet’s on the movie, but who knows. I could be wrong.

The Nanny Diaries stars Scarlett Johansson, Laura Linney, Paul Giamatti, and Fantastic Four’s Chris Evans. Recent college graduate, Annie Braddock isn’t quite ready to step out of the classroom and into the office. Pressured by her family to take on a business profession rather than pursue her dream as a anthropologist, she takes a job as a nanny for a rich, Upper East Side family known only as “the X’s.” It’s in their home that she struggles to balance not only her own life issues, but “the X’s” blatant dysfunction, a budding romance, and a uncontrollable child. The Nanny Diaries opens Friday, August 24.

So how do the presenters of The Nanny Diaries, the Weinstein Company, want you to celebrate National Nanny Week? With consumerism, of course! It’s the American way. So go check out the hook-ups at www.nannyweek.com, and don’t forget to watch the movie! Oh, and if you really are a nanny, you should forget to take the kids . . .err I meant shouldn’t. Sorry, Freudian slip.

The Internet has been a buzz with rumors that the CW’s recently retired (or should I say euthanized) detective show, “Veronica Mars,” will be made into a movie. Following the shows abrupt end last May, fans and hopefuls longed, pleaded, and offered up their first born child for an on-screen resurrection. Take a look at any message board, and you’ll see what I mean. One man even proposed during a “Veronica Mars” commercial break.

But plans for a movie are still non-existent, the show’s star, Kristen Bell told MTV.

“There’s [rumored] talk of a movie one day. Maybe. Who knows?… [But] we haven’t even discussed it… Depends on how well I age… But I’d go wherever [the writers] took me. I think that they’ve always been utterly brilliant.”

The show abruptly ended, leaving fans to their fan-fic and wild imaginations.

“There is no future, unfortunately,” Bell said. “Everybody’s really, really sad to see it go, and we all just keep e-mailing each other. We’re just missing everyone. [But] she has been laid to rest [and] may she rest in peace.”

However, it still isn’t out of the question. The studios have to run out of comic book heroes, quintuples, and remake rights at some point, and then maybe they’ll turn to old WB/CW shows for ideas instead. Think of the possibilities! Dawson’s Creek: The Movie. The Chosen Ones, a Buffy Movie. Okay I’ll stop now. I think I’m scaring you.

Imagine living your life on the run, unable to remember what your real name is, and having the only person you ever loved (as far as you can remember . . .) shot dead because of your relationship with her? It must suck to be Jason Bourne.

Imagine living your life on the run, unable to remember what your real name is, and having the only person you ever loved (as far as you can remember . . .) shot dead because of your relationship with her? It must suck to be Jason Bourne.

Matt Damon radiates a kind of Mark Wahlberg, badass feel in the third chapter of the Bourne cash cow screen fest. Bourne is back and ready to take down whatever and whoever gets in his way of finding out whom and why he is. Still haunted by the death of his girlfriend and garbled memories of “the beginning”, Bourne begins his hunt for specific members of the CIA. Aided by some characters from the previous films, Bourne begins to untangle some lost memories, and he finally draws some answers.

Visually, The Bourne Ultimatum is pretty difficult to watch. Unlike old school action flicks, this movie is filmed entirely on multiple hand-held cameras. The frame is always moving, even on typical over-the-shoulder shots, and there are quick, but slight zooms, much like one would see in a documentary or even home movies. Using this technique creates a sensation of realism, partially due to the fact that we’ve learned to associate these camera movements with “reality” TV, like breaking news and unplanned documentary footage, so although it provides style, it has its practical downsides. I also have some frustration with Julia Stile’s character. She added nothing to the plot in The Bourne Supremacy, and left an inconclusive plot hole in this most recent. Not to mention how annoying it was to see her give herself the same hair cut as Bourne’s dead girlfriend. Gross.

Aside from those two Jenn-defined flaws, I thought this movie was kick-ass. The fight scenes were nearly like something out of The Matrix, the chase scenes would do The French Connection proud, and when Bourne talks that journalist through the busy train station, all I can say is that Bourne has some mad skill. He’s may not be as smooth as Bond, but masculine brawn and innate smarts sets him apart. His love for Marie also brings humanity to his character, and shows that he does have weaknesses.

Jason Bourne, the character, may not be as memorable as some other action hero icons, but he has qualities that impress. The Bourne Ultimatum is a great third installment to series, just make sure you have great eyesight or eye drops when you go see it.

The Upside: Kick-ass action.

The Downside: Dizzying camera work and Julia Stiles.

On The Side: If I had to choose who could save me, Jason Bourne or James Bond, I’d pick Jason Bourne any day.

Caruso and star LaBeouf team up again for DreamWorks’ new thriller Eagle Eye. Once you go Shia, you can’t go back.

LaBeouf will star as a young slacker along side Michelle Monaghan, who is set to play a single mother. Both characters are framed as terrorists and form an unlikely alliance as they are on the run from the government and those who framed them. Rosario Dawson joins the cast as a government agent trailing the pair.

Monaghan has just completed The Heartbreak Kid with Ben Stiller due out in October.

Dawson was last seen in Death Proof and has a number of projects in the works, such as Zack And Miri Make A Porno and Sin City 2. Funny, I just realized that she was also in A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints, another LaBeouf film.

Paramount will distribute the film.

Written by Hillary Seitz and to be produced by Alex Kurtzman and Robert Orci with Pat Crowley and Ed McDonnell, Eagle Eye is slated to begin filming this fall.

Here, my friends, is the epitome of the Hollywood Blockbuster. Big, flashy, entertaining, and charming, this movie made me remember what it was like to see through the eyes of my 6-year-old self again. How the heck did they make a mere car turn into a friggin’ robot right before my eyes?!? Magic of course! And what about the back story behind the Decepticons and Autobots, cheesy? I didn’t notice! It was too awesome to notice!!! Nah, I’m not excited about the movie at all . . .

Based on the popular 1980’s toy, Transformers, and, I’m sure, on the the comic book and t.v. series that followed, the Autobots and their villainous rivals, the Decepticons, are brought to Earth to seek the Allspark, a cube that creates life from inanimate objects. Transformers introduces Sam Witwicky, a teenager ready for his first car. As it turns out, Sam’s great grandfather played a significant role in this race for the Allspark, so it’s up to him to become the Transformer’s human ally. He just doesn’t know it yet.

As every “toy movie” should be, this movie was so great at evoking the innocence and fun that movies of today lack. Shia LaBeouf’s comedic timing was terrific, the CG was remarkable (Bumblebee’s eyes, Man. Even with the bot mute, I can see his thoughts), and who can’t love a movie where the good guy is goodness and decency incarnate (the regal Optimus Prime) and the bad guy is just pure evil. This movie may have some hokey points of plot, but at the same time, its portrayed in a “realistic” way. Of course ginormous robots would be clumsy and unable to keep their enormous feet from squishing through Mrs. Witwicky’s garden. Of course it would be a naive, innocent kid who believes that these alien robots are friends. It sure as heck wouldn’t be an adult!

What I did have issues with was the military soldiers and the sound wave analysts. I felt like the movie didn’t need them. I don’t know if this is because I’m a huge Shia Labeouf fan and I’m biased, but I felt like the other plot lines were almost too developed. Rather than using these characters to aid the existing plot, the writers attempted to add completely different story lines that just took away from the already established story.

Other than that, this flick was exhilarating, the tone was light, and did I mention that it was fun? You have to see this movie in the theaters. I won’t be the same otherwise! For a bigger than life movie with bigger than life robots, that calls for a really big screen.
