Not exactly how we missed it a few months back, but it appears that we are way late in reporting that Forest Whitaker is circling the wagons on Sly Stallone’s hotly anticipated thriller The Expendables.

Normally I would save this for tomorrow’s Daily Diversion, but it just feels like something I should be posting in a more timely matter. I will find something silly for the morning.

Like an Arrested Development movie or Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, a sequel to the hit Broken Lizard comedy Super Troopers has always been right on the edge, while still giving fans that pipedream vibe. But now they are talking, and talking seriously.

I could probably give you a ten-point list of reasons why you should check out the upcoming suspense thriller Taken. Then again, all I really need is a clip from the film.

In addition to a 3D episode of Chuck the week following the Superbowl, NBC will also play home to a very special 3D commercial for the Dreamworks Animation release Monsters vs. Aliens. It’s a pretty cool idea, if they can pull it off.

As many of you may know, we are not big fans of beating dead horses around here. Then again, this little ad that TotalFilm worked up for The Spirit is less of a beat and more of a poke — a poke at one of the most awful films of 2008.

Earlier today I posted 2008: The Cinescape, a fan made dedication to some of the more iconic films of 2008. This afternoon I received word that another such video has appeared online, from YouTubian Kees van Dijkhuizen.

The man with the creative juices that spilt all over The Nightmare Before Christmas is back to direct an original work of Neil Gaiman’s — a real geekgasm if ever there was one. And while you sit and ponder whether or not you thought Tim Burton directed Nightmare, as that is what you’ve always thought, please enjoy these brilliant behind the scenes featurettes.

The folks over at the Pixar Blog pointed us in the direction of a very cool new book that is now available for pre-order from Amazon. It is called “The Art of UP” and it shows of some of the artwork from Pixar’s 2009 entry.

The folks over at HissTank.com have posted a first look at the M.A.R.S. Troopers in director Stephen Sommers’ G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. These masked troops are said to operate with ’supreme skill and extreme force.’

Clint Eastwood is still a badass, and I would go as far as to say that he will remain that way until the day he dies. He is also quick to remind us that we are all a bunch of pussies.

You may remember last year when one adventurous fan created 2007: A Year for Drama, a pretty cool little video montage of some of the year’s more memorable films. That same guy is back this year with 2008: The Cinescape, a similar montage set to Sigur Ros.

Yet another little update from Entertainment Weekly’s posting of various new images this morning. This time around we see some new shots from McG’s Terminator Salvation, including one shot with John Connor (Christian Bale) coming in close to a T-600.

I know that I just said this morning that we wouldn’t be posting anything else until tomorrow, as we were taking New Year’s Day off, but this was just too good to pass up.

Wow, time does fly when you are having fun. And we have had a lot of fun in 2008, have we not?

As is customary this time of year, it is my duty (and honor) to present you my list of the Ten Best Films of 2008. And in the past year we’ve seen an interesting range of films, have we not?
