Kevin Smith to Direct Heroes: Origins
Movie News By Neil Miller on July 31, 2007 | Be the First To CommentLet’s start with this fact; yes, I know that this is a movie website. But in the spirit of fanboys around the world, I feel that it is perfectly OK to talk about Heroes, as it is quite possibly one of the few TV shows out there that plays out more like a movie than a standard primetime drama. With that said, here is some pretty awesome news for both Heroes fans and movie fanboys alike.
TV Spot: Rob Zombie’s Halloween
Movie News By Neil Miller on July 31, 2007 | Be the First To CommentEveryone at Comic-Con was able to get a quick look at Rob Zombie’s re-envisioning of the legendary Halloween story. If you weren’t at Comic-Con though, I’m sure you still may be interested in seeing some footage. It just so happens that a 30 second TV spot has hit the web. Take a look below. Halloween is due out on August 31.
I wonder if anyone wants to know more about this mysterious “Cloverfield” project that J.J. Abrams didn’t tell us anything about at Comic-Con (see the report here). We didn’t get a title, we didn’t get any more plot information but we did get a poster. Then on the last day of the Con we got to see some on-set footage courtesy of the folks over at IESB.net. That footage has just been posted online this morning, and can be found here. The film hits theaters on 1-18-08. We expect a title before that, to say the least.
On Sunday during the “Masters of the Web” panel at Comic-Con, Brad Miska from Bloody-Disgusting scooped that there was a third installment to the very popular Underworld in the works. Robert from IESB.net then quickly added that the director of the flick would be FX master Patrick Tatopoulos. As for the plot of the film, all we know is that it was written by Len Wiseman, who directed the first two Underworld flicks, and it is likely to be a prequel. Will Wiseman’s wife Kate Beckinsale return to slide into that tight leather outfit? That is yet to be seen. We will keep you posted. Source: IESB.net
Finishing up the duo of previously released Bourne movies, here is the review of 2004′s The Bourne Supremacy. Watch this badboy thriller to bone up for another of this summer’s sequels (in fact, it’s at least the 4th film series to release it’s 3rd film in 2007) so you’re all set to get ultimatized by The Bourne Ultimatum. In this adventure we rejoin Jason Bourne on his adventures in amnesia land, though a few more things are starting to click. Reupping for another tour of duty are Brian Cox, Julia Stiles, and Franka Potente in addition to our Streisand-turned ass-whooper Matt Damon. For good effect we add a dose of Karl Urban and Joan Allen to assemble a tight little cast. One of my personal favorites, Karel Roden, also joins the cast in a small role, but his menacing looks are put to good used. This time out Bourne has been framed for a double murder and all signs point to Treadstone, the project behind the creation of the super-spies. Joan Allen co-stars as Pamela Landy, an FBI Investigator on the tail of Bourne and with an ear to the ground when it comes to inter-office betrayals. We get a few sweet fights that strive to remain in the realm of realism and have a nice, vicious and brutal quality to them that stays with the film’s overall approach to the spy genre. There is an ultra-awesome foot-to-car chase that ends with some stylish driving and a good smash-up that [Due to Content Scraping and Theft, we have been forced to try abbreviated feeds. When you think of classic Comic-Con, you don’t necessarily think that the Walt Disney Company would be pushing anything more than Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck titles. Even in the past couple years, when Hollywood finally caught on to the fact that comic book fans can help propel major blockbusters to success, Disney has taken a back seat to the big budget adaptations of Marvel properties. Not this year. Not by a long shot.
When it comes to the upcoming Disney films, I’m excited. But as excited I am to see “Prince Caspian,†nothing can compare to the excitement I feel for Pixar’s upcoming film “WALL•E.†Audiences first got a look at this little robot film at the head of “Ratatouille†out this summer. The story revelations were slim, but we all understood the heart behind it.
What was I expecting when I went to see No Reservations? Not much. It isn’t that I expected it to be bad, it is just that I looked at it as a sort of fluffy space filler kind of a movie. It is true that it is a bit on the fluffier side, but it is anything but a space filler. This movie, a remake of a German film called Mostly Martha, is a nice slice-of-life kind of movie. No Reservations is not about plot, it is not about getting from point A to point B, it is not about having a script go through hoops to make the story work, it isn’t even about how it ends. What it is about are the lives of those involved and the changes that these characters go through. The plot points flow naturally, moving along in a matter of fact way. Life changes, that is a fact, and this movie takes us through a certain period in the lives of three characters. The story is centered on Kate (Catherine Zeta-Jones), an emotionally unavailable master chef whose life revolves around preparing some gorgeous-looking food. While she may be unable to maintain a relationship for any amount of time, she is more than happy to show off her mean streak should any of her culinary talents be challenged. It is this show of temperament that leads to the disappearance of customers, and the subsequent demand from the restaurant owner (Patricia Clarkson) that she seek [Due to Content Scraping and Theft, we have been forced to try abbreviated feeds. It is possible that we haven’t given Superbad enough props yet. Sure we gave it the official stamp of approval with an “A” grade in our review, but that won’t do the trick. This movie is absolutely juvenile and piss-your-pants funny. To illustrate, here are some video clips.
The Online Film Community Announces the Top 100 Films of All-Time
Movie News By Neil Miller on July 30, 2007 | Comments (19)A few weeks back we had a chance to participate in a very interesting project. Members of the online film community (everything from bloggers to Variety.com) got together to select the Top 100 Films of All-Time. Both myself and Kevin Carr were able to submit our nominations to this list, which serves as the communities response to the AFI’s Top 100 Films of All-Time.
Jon Favreau rocked the Con on Thursday afternoon when he surprised the crowd at the Paramount presentation with some awesome footage from Iron Man. It was a glorious surprise. Moments after the panel the buzz began to flow through the vast space of the San Diego Convention Center. Two days later the line was seemingly down the street to get into the Marvel Studios presentation, where the Iron Man footage was scheduled to be shown once again.
In Drillbit Taylor, Owen Wilson re-teams with Mr. Judd Apatow (I’m trying to be respectful, the man is a genius for Superbad) to play a guy who lies his way into a gig guarding high school freshman from a few bullies. It has been rough goings of late for Wilson, who hasn’t had a big hit since Wedding Crashers, so an Apatow flick just can’t hurt — even despite the fact that Steven Brill is directing; Judd Apatow is producing. Are you confused? Either way, the clip is below. Drillbit Taylor beats the ass of little high school bullies starting March 21, 2008.
Comic-Con Iron Man Footage Hits YouTube
Movie News By Neil Miller on July 29, 2007 | Be the First To CommentSomehow we knew this was coming. It wasn’t going to be long before the astounding footage of Iron Man would hit YouTube. The footage shows Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, the Mark I suit and then the non-CG enhanced scenes of the Mark III suit. Take a peek after the jump before the video gets pulled.
Reject Report: The Simpsons Movie is a massive hit. Woo hoo!!!!
Movie News By John Cairns on July 29, 2007 | Be the First To CommentEveryone is smiling in Springfield today. We all knew The Simpsons Movie was going to be Number One and was going to be big at the theaters, yada yada yada. But to the tune of $71 million dollars?! There’s no need for Fox movie executives to move to Alaska in disgrace. All that needs to be said are two simple words: woo hoo!!!

Comic-Con: More Celebrity Sightings!
Photo Gallery By Neil Miller on July 29, 2007 | Be the First To CommentWe are getting good at finding and cornering celebrities, making them tell us about what is going on in their lives and how they feel about it and then taking a picture or two (we do need some sort of proof — you understand.) And when it came to meeting some big talent, day 3 of Comic-Con proved to be just as plentiful as the 2 days that preceded it. Who did we see? Take a look…
Comic-Con: Grindhouse: Two DVD Releases – Two Release Dates
Movie News By Brian C. Gibson on July 29, 2007 | Comments (41)An actress, completely costumed as Cherry Darling (mind you, an actual amputee), stood next to a pole and enticed me to come closer. Dimension’s booth at Comic-Con is basically all about the Grindhouse DVD release. What I found though, just about made me want to cry. If it wasn’t bad enough that all ads for the film were pulled within a week of its release, the DVDs will be released as separate films.
Comic-Con Report: Focus / Rogue Pictures
Movie News By Neil Miller on July 28, 2007 | Be the First To CommentComic-Con 2007 marches on. We have seen all kinds of stuff. Iron Man flew threw the air on Thursday, the cast from Get Smart left the crowd in stitches on Friday and Saturday was sure to make for some surprises. First on the schedule for me was the presentation from Focus Features and Rogue Studios, presenting Balls of Fury, The Strangers and Neil Marshall’s Doomsday. Let’s take a look at what happened.
While I was sitting around watching the guys from Balls of Fury entertaining 5,000 fans during the Focus/Rogue presentation here at Comic-Con, a little birdie sent me a message that Tony Stark’s car was parked just across the street at the Omni Hotel. Unable to get up (mostly because of my lower body going numb), I sent Kevin Carr to do some recon. Moments later the inbox of my phone was filling with pictures. Allow me to share…
Comic-Con Review: Doctor Strange
Movie News By Kevin Carr on July 28, 2007 | Be the First To CommentThere was a time when comic book adaptations were either high budget studio pictures (like Richard Donner’s “Superman†or Tim Burton’s “Batmanâ€) or cheesy cartoons for the Saturday morning audience. It wasn’t until the 1990s that television animation actually surpassed the feature films in originality, creativity and faithfulness to the original source material.
